A Darling Downs man set to plead guilty to a raft of violent and serious domestic violence charges has been discharged of the attempted murder offence.
The Toowoomba man, Jaymz Gregory Smith, was discharged of one count of attempted murder in a domestic violence setting before the Toowoomba Supreme Court on Tuesday, May 13.
Originally, Smith’s matter was to proceed via trial, and witnesses were due to give prerecorded evidence on Tuesday, however he was bulk arraigned on a new indictment instead.
Smith pleaded guilty to the following domestic violence crimes: torture, deprivation of liberty, suffocation, strangulation, three charges of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with a weapon, and four charges of common assault.
He will be sentenced for the heinous domestic violence charges before the same court on Friday, May 16.
Smith has been in custody since his arrest in early October 2023, despite his attempts to be released on bail.
Justice Catherine Muir remanded Smith in custody on the new indictment.
“In terms of the previous indictment that was presented on the 11th of July last year, that’s the indictment that had the attempted murder charge on it and two other counts, you are discharged in relation to that indictment,” she told Smith.
“Thank you, your honour,” Smith responded.
