A popular Fortitude Valley venue says it acted “within the full accordance of the law” after a man died within moments of being restrained.
Police are investigating the sudden death of the man at popular rooftop bar and restaurant Maya, on the corner of Ann and Morgan streets about 12.20am on Monday.
Police say the man was asked to leave the business at closing time and was restrained by staff when he resisted.
He became unresponsive, a short time later. CPR was started but the man died at the scene.
A witness who was outside Maya Mexican at the time of the incident said the man lost consciousness and heard the man shouting prior to the incident.
“He was trying to get back inside the club. He was like kicking around,” the witness said.
“A lot of people were in the surrounding area.
“Bystanders attempted CPR, and he looked like he was sleeping.
“I didn’t want to get involved at all. A lot of people had left the club too.”
A spokesman from Coats Group - the company that owns Maya - said they were assisting and cooperating with Queensland Police.
When asked about the incident the spokesman said the venue “acted within the full accordance of the law.”
“And this will be revealed as part of the police investigation in due time.
“No further comments.”
A crime scene has been declared and investigations around the circumstances of the death are ongoing.
Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
