Police have charged a man after he allegedly attempted to steal a power generator powering a set of traffic lights in Caboolture on Saturday afternoon.
A member of the public called police at around 3pm, saying a man was tampering with and trying to steal the generator from the intersection of Bribie Island Rd and Toorbul Point Rd.
The man allegedly fled the scene in a white ute after his alleged theft attempt was disturbed.
Officers arrived on-scene to discover a chain securing the generator had been cut and, as a result, the traffic lights had lost power.
Soon after, police went to a Ningi address and found a man and a white ute with a pair of bolt cutters inside.
The 39-year-old local man was charged with one count each of attempted stealing and wilful damage.
He is due to appear in Caboolture Magistrates Court on April 4.
Acting chief superintendent Adam Guild said patrols will continue throughout southeast Queensland over the coming days to deter anti-social and criminal behaviour in the wake of the severe weather event.
“The Queensland Police Service has zero tolerance for stealing, especially during a disaster,” Mr Guild said.
“As we move into the recovery phase, police will continue to target offenders and hold them responsible for their actions.”
