A firefighter has been allegedly assaulted while battling a suspicious blaze at a Logan apartment complex in the early hours of Monday.

The fire broke out at the property in Defiance Rd, Logan Central, just after 4am.

A 56-year-old male firefighter who was battling the blaze was allegedly assaulted by a 51-year-old Charters Towers man 4.30am, causing him a minor facial injury.

A suspect was taken into custody at the scene and was charged with one count of serious assault person performing lawful duty.

Police alleged the fire, which did not cause any injuries but spread to a neighbouring property, was deliberately lit.

“Initial investigations indicate that around 3.30am, a person attended an apartment complex on Defiance Rd and entered the downstairs garage of a unit where two fires were lit,” a police spokesman said.

“The person then entered the garage of the neighbouring unit and lit another fire, before igniting the front garden of the next-door house.

“Emergency services attended the scene where they located and extinguished the fires.

“The garages sustained minor damage.”

Police said there was no indication that the Charters Towers man lit the fires.

He was expected to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.
