Springwood man faces court over alleged plot to meet child for sex

A man has been charged with child sex offences after allegedly asking a child to meet him in a shopping centre bathroom and sending explicit content.

A man who allegedly asked a child to meet in a shopping centre bathroom for sex and sent explicit content will front Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Australian Federal Police allege a 52-year-old Springwood man messaged a child on an online platform to organise to meet him and later sent a video in August 2024.

The child then stopped messaging the man and blocked him on the online app and did not attend the location.

Leading senior constable Paul Graham said the investigation is a reminder for parents to think about what children could be exposed to online.

“Indecent messages aimed at children are abhorrent, and the AFP investigates these matters intensely to put offenders before the court,” Constable Graham said.

“Offenders look to exploit children online however they can, so it’s always important for parents to be mindful of who children could be interacting with online.”

The investigation unfolded after an alert from the United States’ national centre for missing and exploited children led to AFP’s northern command joint anti child exploitation team to begin their investigation in October 2024.

A search warrant was executed for the Springwood man’s home and a mobile phone was seized on June 9, 2025.

Police found the man had allegedly deleted the chat and its contents from the phone, but was able to be restored by the messaging platform at the request of the investigators.

The man was charged with multiple child sex offences, including carriage service to procure a person under 16 years of age and use a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under 16 years of age.

The 52-year-old man dresssed in a blue t-shirt and white shorts can be seen being walked into the Brisbane watchhouse by police.

The AFP and its partners are committed to stopping child exploitation and abuse and the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) is driving a collaborative national approach.

Members of the public who have information about people involved in child abuse are urged to contact the ACCCE. If you know abuse is happening right now, or a child is at risk, call police immediately on 000.
