The Queensland friend of a father of 11 killed in a horror crash in the Illawarra earlier this month has faced court for the first time since being bailed.
Kirsten Anthony, 24, fronted Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after the M1 Motorway collision on Mount Ousley which claimed the life of Hayden Errol Frank Selby.
The court previously heard Anthony, an inexperienced driver from Plainland an hour west of Brisbane, “tried to take evasive action” before “indirectly” crashing into and killing her friend on the main road into the Illawarra on July 19.
Kirsten was driving a Toyota Kluger with a box trailer southbound while she was being led by Mr Selby, 31, who was riding a motorbike.
Emergency services arrived on the scene about 4.10pm, by which stage Mr Selby was dead.
Anthony was uninjured and taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers established a crime scene and following inquiries they charged Anthony with negligent driving occasioning death.
Registrar Angela Wilson when granting Anthony bail earlier this month described the matter as “very tragic circumstances”.
Ms Wilson ordered Anthony to report to Wollongong police daily, provide a residential address within 24 hours of release, attend a doctor to receive a mental health care plan, deposit a $500 surety and not occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle.
In court on Tuesday, police prosecutor Dane Corran said the matter was still being reviewed by the serious motor vehicle collision review panel.
The prosecutor submitted the matter was being considered for prosecution by the Director of Public Prosecutions and asked for a six-week adjournment which was granted by Magistrate Michael Douglass.
When leaving court, Anthony did not respond when asked by the media if she wished to say anything about the crash.
Speaking with this publication in the wake of the crash, Mr Selby’s partner Katie Powell described him as a “protector” who would go above and beyond for the people in his life.
“Hayden was a protector to everyone he cared for. He was my rock and my 11 children’s hero,” Ms Powell said.
“We met in 2014 through mutual friends and we have been inseparable ever since, I found my soulmate the day I met him.”
