The last of a group of inmates who started a costly $27k riot at Woodford Correctional Centre last year – which resulted in a code black and teargas being deployed – has faced sentence.

Kelton Dallas James Fuller, 22, pleaded guilty at Brisbane’s District Court on Friday to taking part in a riot, causing property damage, at Woodford Correctional Centre.

The court was told Fuller had been one of a group of inmates who rioted in Woodford’s exercise yard on October 13 last year.

Judge Nathan Jarro said Fuller had been one of the principal offenders and had helped rip phones off the walls, destroying them in the process.

He said Fuller also threw an object at a cell door, which caused the window to break.

When four of Fuller’s co-offenders faced sentence in September, the court was told the riot went on for 20 minutes and caused $27,000 of damage.

A police dog squad was deployed, along with the use of teargas and other chemical agents, the court was told at the time.

Inmate Alex Graeme Stevens was sentenced for his role in the riot in July, at which time the court heard the riot resulted in a “code black” being declared.

The Maroochydore District Court was told at Stevens’ sentence how some inmates lit a fire and threw objects at staff, while others damaged furniture and CCTV equipment.

At Fuller’s sentence on Friday, the court heard Fuller had a “significant past criminal history”.

Judge Jarro noted he had been sentenced to four years jail just over a month prior to the riot for an offence of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm while speeding excessively.

That sentence had been cumulative upon prior sentences, meaning his full time expiry date was March 19, 2027.

The court heard Fuller was the last of the rioting inmates to be sentenced, with his co-offenders receiving sentences ranging from eight to 12 months in jail.

Judge Jarro told Fuller he was “still a young man” and still had the potential to turn his life around.

He said he needed to ensure Fuller’s sentence was not overly crushing, given the amount of time he was already serving.

Fuller was sentenced to eight months’ jail, to be served cumulatively with his prior sentences.

His 367 days in custody since the riot were taken into account but not declared time-served.

Judge Jarro set Fuller’s parole eligibility for today, December 13.
