A 76-year-old man has died and a teenager taken into custody following a vehicle and mobility scooter crash south of Brisbane on Saturday morning.

A white Holden Barina and a red Ford Focus collided on Anthony St in Kingston about 10:40am before the Ford Focus left the road and crashed into a mobility scooter.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said multiple crews attended the incident with a 76-year-old treated for life-threatening injuries.

He was declared dead at the scene.

A 17-year-old boy, the driver of the Ford Focus, was taken into custody at the scene.

A male and female, believed to be occupants of the Ford Focus, fled the scene on foot, police said in a statement.

The driver and sole occupant of the Holden Barina was not physically injured.

Queensland Police Chief Inspector Les Bulluss said the crash was a “very tragic incident”.

“(At) around about 10:45am there’s an elderly gentleman, a 76-year-old resident from the local area, (who has) been on his mobility scooter going about his daily business, crossing the road when, tragically, he has ended up being killed,” he said.

Inspector Bulluss said police will allege the 17-year-old driver ran a stop sign just moments before the crash.

Inspector Bulluss said the car driven by the 17-year-old was not believed to be stolen.

Police are investigating whether the 17-year-old held a valid driver’s licence. It is understood the 17-year-old took the car from a family member.

He said a member of the public performed a citizens arrest before police arrived.

“We are very grateful that a member of the public has intervened and contained that person until police were able to arrive,” Inspector Bulluss said.

“It’s great to have the driver in custody and that has saved a lot of investigative time by our CPIU unit and forensic crash unit.”

Kingston resident Johnny Akpinar said he rushed to the scene after hearing a “massive bang”

“I came out … heard a massive bang … ran here and saw the guy just sitting up against the fence there,” he said.

“Just in shock in the state he was in.

“He was choking on blood, I quickly grabbed him … half the mobility scooter was on top of him.

“Threw that off him … put him on his side just to get the blood out of his throat.”

Mr Akpinar and a few off duty nurses performed CPR until emergency services arrived.

“Pretty much did whatever we could,” he said.

Mr Akpinar said there had been several other crashes at the same intersection.

“The council needs to do something,” he said.

Tania Monaghan was at Hyperdome Shopping Centre with her boyfriend when her neighbour called about the crash.

“I got a phone call from my neighbour Lisa saying that a car had gone through my fence,” Ms Monaghan said.

“I came home to elderly gentleman laying next to my front gate, paramedics were still working on him at that time, five minutes later they stopped.

“His scooter was trapped under the back of the car.”

Ms Monaghan said there had been four crashes at the same intersection in recent times.

“I sit here at night wondering whether my dogs are going to be killed or somebody is going to be killed,” she said.

“I said to council the last time that someone is going to die … I predicted it.”

Other residents described the intersection as a “drag strip”.

The vehicles were towed from the scene just after 3pm

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV vision is urged to contact police.

Forensic Crash Unit investigations remain ongoing.
