Police were called to Spine St at Sumner, an industrial backstreet behind the Centenary Hwy, at 10.30pm Saturday after reports a large group of people were involved in “hooning related activity”.

It is understood there were possibly hundreds in the crowd when police arrived, with CCTV footage showing spectators running for their cars after spotting the patrol.

One fleeing vehicle, a white Holden Commodore VE ute, struck the girl as she crossed the road and did not stop.

“The pedestrian … sustained serious injuries as a result,” police said in a statement.

“Police will allege the driver and vehicle involved did not remain at the scene.”

The police patrol helped administer first aid, alongside several bystanders who remained on scene.

Paramedics - including a critical care paramedic - arrived on scene minutes later and the girl was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with head and arm injuries.

It is understood the cars had gathered near the intersection of Neon St, near Goodyear, with one business owner saying the road had been used for hoon gatherings in the past.

“It was 2am and there were about 100 cars,” he said.

“It was quite hectic.”

The Holden did not have number plates and had pre-existing damage along its left hand side.

The driver was described as being bald and caucasian with tattoos on the left side of his face.
