A former senior Queensland lawyer, who is also father to three members of popular Brisbane band Sheppard, has been arrested for the second time in Papua New Guinea over allegations he illegally transferred money from a fund set up for victims of an large scale environmental disaster.
Greg Sheppard, who served as a crown prosecutor in Queensland in the 1990s and whose three children form part of the indie pop band, has been arrested and charged over his alleged involvement in relation to the transferring of millions of dollars meant to help PNG communities dealing with the disastrous environmental impacts of PNG’s Western Province Ok Teddy Mine.
According to national PNG police, the 65-year-old was charged with two counts of misappropriation, and two counts of money laundering in relation to his alleged direct involvement in the transfer of funds, amounting to over $18 million (PNG K52 million).
Those allegations follow several charges from earlier this year, when Sheppard was accused and charged with two counts of conspiracy and another two counts of false pretence in relation to the same criminal investigation.
Police allege Sheppard’s law firm, Young and Williams Lawyers and its client Ok Tedi Fly River Development Foundation Limited, unlawfully withdrew over $90 million (PNG K268 million) from the Western Province People’s Dividends Trust Account.
The trust account had been set up to assist tens of thousands of community members who continue to feel the impacts of the improper disposal of about two billion tons of untreated mining waste, which had been stored in a specially built dam.
Catastrophically, the dam collapsed in the mid 1980s, leaking dangerous chemical waste into surrounding communities.
It’s understood Sheppard intends to fight all charges.
