A decapitated koala and a slaughtered border collie were among a sickening discovery of mutilated animals left in an inner city Brisbane park.

The barbaric and bizarre dumping of close to 20 dead animals at Toowong’s Anzac Park also included a cat, possums and guinea pigs.

It is understood some of the butchered animals were in plastic bags while two large drums containing dirt were found nearby.

The scene was so horrific first responders have been offered counselling.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed officers attended the park about 6.30pm on Thursday and that incident was referred to the RSPCA.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said three crews had attended the park about 6.20pm on Thursday including a scientific unit.

The spokesman confirmed two 40l drums had been found at the scene and an exclusion zone was established for testing.

He said the tests did not return any positive readings and the scene was left with police by 8pm.

An RSPCA spokeswoman confirmed the incident was under investigation.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner described the incident as a “sick act”.

“I’m saddened, disturbed and appalled at what’s occurred here,” Cr Schrinner said.

“It’s now a matter for police who I hope will find the culprits so our courts can deal with them.

“I can confirm council officers who were first on the scene have been offered counselling as a result of the horrific things that they saw.”

Wildlife Queensland spokesman Des Boyland condemned the actions of the individuals responsible.

“Our wildlife is going through enough fights at present. This is outrageous,” Mr Boyland said.

“I can’t believe this has happened. It obviously takes a sick person to do this.”

Anzac Park had on Friday morning returned to normality with walkers and visitors seemingly unaware of the gruesome discovery only hours earlier.

Parts of Anzac Park are full of dense bushland while its northern boundary runs adjacent to the Western Freeway.

The park is surrounded by ritzy Queenslander homes and is a suburb where house prices sit at more than $1.5m.
