A Brisbane woman charged with attempting to abduct a six-year-old girl has not applied for bail.

The 40-year-old woman was arrested last night after she allegedly attempted to kidnap the child, who wasn’t known to her, on Park Rd, Milton, about 5.50pm.

A police spokeswoman said the girl was walking with her mother when the woman allegedly picked her up and attempted to walk away with her.

“The mother was alerted and intervened,” the spokeswoman said.

She said the woman fled on foot and was arrested a short time later.

The Durack woman spent the night in the watch-house before appearing at Brisbane Arrest Court this morning, when she did not apply for bail.

A mental health assessment found she had a history of psychotic illness and appeared to have a mental health condition.

Lawyer Caitlin Shannon-Dear said a court liaison officer believed the woman should be taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for further examination.

Magistrate Judith Daley agreed and adjourned the matter to June 8.

She said police had prepared an objection to bail.
