The Brisbane Broncos player at the centre of a domestic violence police investigation will not be stood down from playing in the NRL.

The Broncos’ turbulent 2024 NRL premiership season continued on Monday following revelations a player had been questioned by police over the weekend.

Queensland Police attended a property in Brisbane’s south on Sunday to respond to an alleged domestic disturbance.

The player was not arrested or charged, however the police investigation remains ongoing.

“The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is investigating a domestic violence report relating to an incident in Brisbane’s south on Sunday July 28, 2024,” a police statement said.

“Investigations into this matter are ongoing.”

The Broncos were blindsided by the situation on Monday morning after the player did not immediately report the incident to the club.

The Broncos have helped the player engage legal representation and a decision has not been made on whether he will be named for upcoming games.

“Brisbane Broncos were today made aware of a matter involving one of our players, which the club has referred to the NRL Integrity Unit,” a Broncos statement said.

“The health and wellbeing of all parties is paramount for our club, and support has been offered to those involved.

“At this stage, the club is not in a position to comment further.”

Given the player has not been charged, the situation does not fall under the NRL’s No Fault Stand Down policy.

The No Fault policy gives the NRL the power to immediately stand down a player that is facing criminal charges that carry a maximum jail term of 11 years or more.

It also allows the NRL to apply discretionary powers if the potential jail term is less than 11 years.

The NRL has used those discretionary powers multiple times to stand down players, particularly those facing domestic violence related charges.

However the NRL cannot act in this instance given charges have not been laid and information around the alleged incident is unclear.

While the player is clear to continue playing, he is no guarantee to play upcoming games given the current situation and recent personal circumstances.

The saga is another unwanted distraction for the Broncos amid a worrying form slump which has put their 2024 title hopes on life support.

The Broncos were shocking in a 41-16 loss to the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium last Saturday, their seventh loss in eight games and fifth straight defeat at home.

Sitting 13th on the ladder, they must beat the Titans and win their remaining five matches to finish in the top eight and have any chance of avenging last year’s grand final loss.
