A blind dog stolen from a Gold Coast home in a bizarre break-in has been spotted hundreds of kilometres away at Yamba in NSW.
Bowie, a four-year-old tricoloured Australian shepherd, was stolen from the Durman family home at Southport on Wednesday.
And police have on Thursday afternoon released CCTV vision of a man officers want to speak to in relation to the incident.
The vision shows the man attending a service station at Yamba, 180km south of the Queensland border, about 4.30pm.
In the vision, a dog that looks like Bowie can be seen sitting in the front passenger seat of a 2022 Grey Hyundai Tucson, which was also stolen from the Gold Coast home.
Police are urgently appealing for anyone who may have seen or know this man, or may have seen Bowie in the Northern New South Wales area to come forward.
Earlier, Bowie’s owner Luke Durman described the chaotic scenes at the family home when he arrived with his son Leo to find Bowie gone and the house in disarray.
“Normally Bowie, our pup runs out and greets us and he wasn’t there,” he said.
“All we could see was food and stuff strewn around the living room, golf clubs broken, Leo was hysterical that Bowie was missing.
“There was lego all through the toilets, baby photos had been placed all through the toilets, food had been thrown around upstairs, there was goods under the kids’ beds and my study had been ransacked, passports were all gone, everything was all over the floor.”
A wedding dress was also stolen.
“Once we realised Bowie was gone, the car and everything else was immaterial to that and the main focus was that we just wanted Bowie back,” he said.
He said he was struggling to understand what had motivated the thieves and urged them to return Bowie to safety.
“You don’t get any lower than that … taking someone’s family dog the kids love.
“He does need regular medical attention, he does need specialist care so if you do have him put him somewhere public so the public can put him back in touch with us.”
The thieves systematically trashed the house, pulling food from the fridge and dumping it on the floor.
A school blazer, rings and an outboard motor were also stolen and wiring was ripped from the fridge while spices and a knife block were put in a bag but left at the scene.
Inspector Scott Knowles from Gold Coast Police said the scene was indicative of offenders seizing items “helter skelter”.
“The items taken were meaningless or valueless to the offenders but obviously have great sentimental value to the owners,” he said.
“It’s indicative of people who don’t give a damn about society and don’t give a damn about the community and don’t give a damn about the victims.”
Kristy Durman said her family was devastated.
“We have two devastated kids and we need our dog home,” she told The Courier-Mail.
Police believe a group of people broke into the Regatta Pde home between 10am and 1.15pm and trashed the place before taking the dog and the homeowner’s car, a grey 2022 Hyundai Tucson.
Police understand they left the scene in the stolen vehicle, bearing Queensland registration 021FO8, and took Bowie with them.
Bowie is described as a tricoloured Australian shepherd with distinctive black, white and gold fur and blue eyes.
On Thursday morning, Mr Durman was alerted to a possible sighting of Bowie at Ormeau on the northern Gold Coast, but after rushing up the M1 the family was devastated to discover it was a false alarm.
It is understood the street has been targeted several times this week with multiple cars stolen from nearby houses.
This latest crime comes a few days after Forest Lake dog Nala was stabbed to death after a violent alleged home invasion.
Anyone who has seen him or the stolen vehicle is urged to contact police immediately.
Investigations are continuing.
