Nearly three months after he went missing while on a walk in his home town of Cleveland, 69-year-old Anthony Roper has tragically been located deceased.
The Cleveland local who had lived in the area with his wife of 50 years for more than two decades was located on Wednesday, police confirmed.
Anthony, who had been an officer in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve before retiring, suffered from dementia.
The community rallied together to try locate Anthony in the days and weeks that followed his March 19 disappearance, with a search crew of about 70 SES personnel, police and volunteers repeatedly setting out to scour bushland and waterways in the area.
At the time of Anthony’s search, his son, Joel Roper, said he would stop at nothing for closure.
“We’re hopeful we’re going to find him either one way or the other, and have some closure,” Mr Roper said.
“We’re just trying to come together to see what’s happening as far as the searching goes.
“I’m glad the community has come together. A lot of people keep to themselves but when things like this come out they really do come together, it’s amazing.”
Only one week before his disappearance, Anthony had been approved to receive additional medical care.
The family sought extra help after Anthony went missing for about 24 hours last September.
His family were looking to have a GPS tracker fitted to Anthony as his dementia continued to take hold of his once brilliant mind.
The community will on Thursday night remember Anthony, with locals encouraged to light a candle for him and his loved ones, and enjoy a glass of Anthony’s favourite drink- a warm hot glass of chocolate milk.
Police have confirmed Anthony’s death is not suspicious.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
