$600k Lambo seized after hooning spree will be auctioned later this month

Police will auction a serial hoon’s $600,000 purple Lamborghini dubbed ‘Violet Crumble’ after the owner evaded police at speeds up to 200km/h.

Police set to auction confiscated $600k car

A $600,000 purple Lamborghini dubbed the Violet Crumble will be auctioned later this month, after it was seized by police following multiple hooning sprees.

The driver, a 28-year-old Sunshine Coast man, was charged with more than 20 traffic offences – including drug-driving and twice evading the police at speeds over 200km/h – as well as attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and disqualified from driving on February 19, 2021.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the laws and punishments for hooning in Queensland were the toughest in the nation.

“The easiest way to avoid losing your car, having it seized, having it forfeited to the state, and then sold off in front of you is to respect your community,” Mr Ryan said.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Ray Rohweder said people wanted to taunt and evade police, but the message was very simple.

“You can run but you can’t hide,” Mr Rohweder said.

“We’ll take our time, we’ll use our investigative powers and the legislation, we will find you, prosecute you, and we will take you car.”

The vehicle was seized under recent anti-hooning legislation.

The timed-auction in the prestige sales will take place between from June 17-25, with inspections available by appointment only.

The vehicle is currently valued around $450,000, but with it only logging around 1000km, Manheim Auctions senior valuer Mark Peel anticipates that figure will be exceeded.

“The vehicle retailed for around $600,000 originally, we have valued it around the $450,000 mark, hopefully we’ll achieve that in auction, but hopefully a bit more,” Mr Peel said.

Mr Ryan said Queensland’s tough new laws put the responsibility on the owner of the vehicle to prove they were not the one committing the offence.
“It is important for governments to have legal frameworks which respond to community concern, and obviously in response to concerns relatively recently around people engaging in hooning activity, we toughened those laws up even further,” Mr Ryan said.

“If police have photo or video evidence of a vehicle engaging in that activity, then the owner will be deemed to be the driver unless they can prove otherwise.”

“This requires owners to give a statutory declaration saying who the driver of the vehicle was.

“If they are not prepared to do that, they are deemed to be the driver and guess what – you lose your car.”

Mr Rohweder said the circumstances of the offences was akin to weaponising the vehicle.

“I’m not sure how much this vehicle weighs, maybe around two or three tonne, at 200km/h it’s pretty simple, that’s weaponising a vehicle,” Mr Rohweder said.
“It could be an innocent person, could be Mum and the kids returning from soccer or dance lessons, if that vehicle hits you at 200km/h, no one is going to live.”

Mr Peel said the vehicle had got serious attention already.

“This is a special vehicle, it has a unique colour and wheels and its got some serious interest already,” Mr Peel said.

“It’s available for appointment at Manheim Brisbane, and quite unique for our Brisbane market, we normally love our four-wheel-drives and our utes up here.

“The auction will run Australia-wide, not just Queensland, and more typical of your Sydney and Melbourne markets, but we’ll get potential buyers from as far as Perth.”
