Police have arrested almost 70 people and impounded 17 cars as part of a hooning blitz on the Gold Coast.

The crackdown was sparked by wild mass hoon gatherings in the Coast’s north last month in which fireworks and gas bottles were hurled at police and several patrol cars were damaged.

Coast police Superintendent Rhys Wildman said 68 people had been arrested as part of the crackdown, code named Operation Tango Vinyl.

They included 10 people for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Seventeen cars were seized under anti-hooning legislation, with one forfeited as part of court action.

More than 330 infringement notices were also issued.

Supt Wildman said police were targeting hoon meeting organisers and individuals and urged the public to report hooning via the PoliceLink app.

He said gatherings of up to 1000 hoons had been successfully stamped out so far.
