Judge ignores fears of escalating bikie hostilities

FORTY-eight hours after a Rebels motorcycle club member was shot eight times, the state’s top anti-bikie cop was arguing in court for an extension of special powers to clamp down on motorcycle gangs.

A member of the Logan chapter of the Rebels, Gokhan “Pitbull’’ Turkyilmaz was also allegedly bashed with a baseball bat, while his partner and two young children were home.

Organised Crime Gangs Detective Superintendent Roger Lowe used the incident at Coomera on February 26 as an example of a recent escalation of crimes involving Rebels members.

Det Supt Lowe told Brisbane Magistrates Court 73 full-patch members of the Rebels Motorcycle Club were charged with 119 criminal offences last year.

“In 2018, we saw a significant level of criminality involved with full patch members of the Rebels,’’ Det Supt Lowe said.

Rebels members were charged with attempted murder, home invasion, extortion and serious drug offences last year, he said at the February 28 hearing before magistrate Belinda Merrin.

He pointed out there had been an escalation of offending by Rebels members in the previous two months.

Members had been charged with affray, going armed in public and acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm while armed.

“There’s eight members of Rebels motorcycle club remanded in custody at the moment for serious offences involving a shooting at Logan Hyperdome,’’ Det Supt Lowe said on February 28.

“In the last 48 hours we’ve seen a member of the Rebels has been shot eight times.

“So we have an ongoing level of concern regarding criminality and behaviours.’’

Det Supt Lowe made the statement while trying to persuade magistrate Belinda Merrin to extend a restricted-premises order for the Rebels’ former Albion clubhouse.

Det Supt Lowe said not all disorderly activities within bikie clubhouses were reported to or known by police.

But he said the orders had seen a number of clubhouses sold and gangs leaving, although some bikie gangs still maintained ownership or management of former clubhouse premises.

“By the very nature of these clubs, a lot of their activities are secretive and within the clubs themselves,’’ he said.

“It’s not uncommon for there to be violence within clubs that’s unreported.’’

Rebels life member John Parker, who owns the Albion clubhouse under trust, represented himself in court, putting to Det Supt Lowe that the Albion St premises was no longer a Rebels clubhouse.

“I disagree with that. It is owned, quite clearly, by the Rebels,’’ Det Supt Lowe said.

Mr Parker put to the senior officer that he could “turn any house into a Rebels clubhouse’’.

“And we could seek an application through the courts for restricted premises or take restricted-premises warrants,’’ Det Supt Lowe said.

Mr Parker said there were probably only 15 members left in the Brisbane chapter, but every member from 1985 had put in money for a share of the Albion property.

“There could be 70 people who have put money into that property and I’m standing here today fighting for all those people,’’ he told the court.

Mr Parker said since VLAD laws were replaced with new legislation in late 2016, virtually the only law affecting bikie club members was that they could not wear their colours in public.

The fact that club members were not wearing colours made them virtually invisible, Mr Parker said.
