‘Ew’: Aussie jet skis in flooded Brisbane carpark
A man filmed jet skiing through a flooded Brisbane carpark has blown up online — but his antics didn’t prompt the reaction he likely hoped for.
A man filmed jet skiing through a flooded Brisbane carpark has been reprimanded for his behaviour, with viewers declaring it “selfish” and pointing out the unhygienic nature of the activity.
The clip, uploaded to TikTok and then shared on forum site Reddit, was captioned “Yeah the boyyysss” and “when it floods in Australia”, and showed the man riding a jet ski through the churning brown water of an underground carpark.
Rather than meet the man’s antics with admiration, however, users were quick to slam them.
Residents have repeatedly been warned not to enter the flood waters because they’ve likely been contaminated by sewage.
“Ew. So many sewer lines have been broken. [Congrats] on their new infections, I guess,” one user commented on the video.
“That basement water would have years of dog, rat and cat sh*t mixed with dirt, grime and ass juice,” wrote another. “No matter how much you dilute it, it’s still a germ soup.”
“That water is full of overflowed sewage,” agreed a third. “And oil/fuel from all the flooded cars.”
According to the WorkSafe Queensland website, “environmental conditions after storms and floods increase the risk for infectious diseases”, while NSW Health says that “flood waters contaminated with sewage may carry a range of viruses, bacteria and parasites”.
Others were infuriated that the man was zipping around a car park while other jet ski owners in flood-affected Queensland and northern NSW — including world surfing champion Mick Fanning — were using theirs to aid those stranded in the rising waters.
“Help rescue people on my wave runner Vs tik tok video of me being selfish? Decisions, decisions,” commented one viewer.
There was also frustration at the possibility the man would get injured and need to be rescued himself, diverting resources from where they’re most needed.
“And some poor SES or ambulance crew would have to ‘rescue’ him if he got hurt,” wrote one.
“‘Coming up next on ‘Tired Of Living’’ – From someone who volunteers for an organisation that sometimes gets called out to rescue idiots like this,” commented another, echoing the sentiment.
While the weather system at the heart of Queensland’s flooding is now moving south, the state’s Deputy Premier Steven Miles warned this morning that more rain was expected over the net few days.
Mr Miles said conditions therefore “could still be dangerous” and create localised flooding.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is predicting possible severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon into the early evening for Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, with heavy rainfall and damaging wind expected across the region.
“Storms could bring a short period of heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts but we will release warnings if that happens,” Bureau meteorologist James Thompson said.
“Storms are likely to impact the southeast Thursday into Friday.”
