It was a feast of schoolboy and schoolgirl footy at the annual Wavell SHS’s Homecoming Day celebration day against traditional rivals Marsden SHS.
Seven Brisbane Broncos-sponsored games rolled on, one after the other, from noon until 8pm.

Here’s some of the very best we saw in a gala day of action, including from the Broncos Old Boys Year 7, Renouf, Hancock, Walters and senior Langer matches.
Year 7-8 girls
Marsden SHS defeated Wavell
Hope Taua (Marsden SHS)
The Marsden SHS was a natural with her running in open space both around the ruck and on the fringe of her halves. She scored a stunning solo try and was also the team’s goal kicker.
Elanna Monaei (Wavell SHS)
Monaei hit the ruck hard with her runs, dislodged the opposition carries with her tackles and scored a try in a fantastic performance. Her covering tackle on rival prop Tiarne Hunt was a bone crunching effort.
Bella Cherrington (Marsden SHS)
Cherrington worked hard with her dummy half runs, giving her side early momentum in its set of six. She was also a nice finisher.
Aericka Baltazar (Wavell SHS)
Under considerable pressure from a well organised, well rehearsed Marsden SHS side, fullback Baltazar was calm under pressure. It was a nice, tidy performance given the momentum of the match was largely against her side.
Helaina Wilson (Marsden SHS)
The Marsden captain and middle forward led from the front, giving her side plenty of front foot ball with his strong runs.
Pieteren Sione (Wavell SHS)
Playing five-eight, Sione used her rugby league IQ to guide her side around the field. There is plenty of upside to her game.

Chevante Moyes and Kalorina Samson (Marsden SHS)
Marsden SHS had a one for all, and all for one forward pack, and benefiting from the forward thrust were these two halves who gave their edge forwards and outside backs a chance to shine.

Wavell SHS 24 defeated Marsden SHS 12
Maddox Sheppard (Wavell SHS)
Sheppard pulled the trigger which fired his team out to an early lead. His clever show and go saw him deceive the opposition enough to get to the try line, and he created the second try for Alex Ebourn with a stop and start and go again run on the blindside before clearing a pass to his centre.
Jeneys Tuimavava-Gerard (Wavell SHS)
He was a colossus in the middle who helped drive his side from a deficit into a front running position.
Joshua Saidi (Marsden SHS)
The tall, athletic centre who impacted the game with straight, power running and forceful defence. He was like having an extra edge forward on the fringes.
Nikau Cleave (Wavell SHS)
Cleave knew no fear with his strong runs in the teeth of the forwards. Wavell needed something when Marsden SHS shifted momentum in the first half and he delivered in spades with an aggressive performance in the second 30 minutes.
Stanlet Rohweder (Marsden SHS)
The left winger for Marsden deserves special praise for his effort. He had limited chances, but when he carried the ball, he took a power of stopping.
Alex Ebourn (Wavell SHS)
There was an error in his game, but as a raw talent the Wavell SHS coaches have a talent to work with in this young centre. He scored a try running off Sheppard.
William Liku and Levi Rolleston (Wavell SHS)
Liku was strong and steady across the duration of the match, riding along with the ebbs and flows of the match. Rolleston looked like a promising player who tried to angle his runs towards the gaps on the left side of the field. He scored a nice try.
Renouf Cup, Year 8
Wavell SHS 20 defeated Marsden SHS 14
Kalani Ford-Stevens (Wavell SHS)
Ford-Stevens was a one man wrecking ball to create his team’s second try of the game, and scored a try himself from a near impossible position. He was also a dangerous ball carrier who will get better with more match condition.
Tipene Moyes (Marsden SHS)
Moyes was strong with the ball but mixed his game up with some deft passing. HIs long ball to the left of the field in the second half set up one of the tries of the afternoon that got Marsden SHS back within touch, 14-8, with 10 minutes to go. He was also terrific in the huddle after Wavell had scored the opening two tries with the manner in which he encouraged his teammates.
Tristian Renata-Kokiri and Jonah Bell (Wavell SHS)
The two Wavell props were bruising brothers who took their side forward against a physical opposition.
Walker Taualupe (Marsden SHS)
Walker Taualupe earns a mention here for the solo try of the day, a wonderful 50m performance in two spurts that closed the Wavell SHS’s gap to just six points with three minutes remaining.
Hancock Cup, Year 9
Marsden SHS 16 defeated Wavell SHS 4
SJ Fanolua-Pulepule (Marsden SHS)
Fanolua-Pulepule was the outstanding player on the field in a tense, close-fought game. He scored the game clinching try with a low to the ground solo effort from 10m, and around his powerhouse charges he had an ability to unload in heavy traffic on his way to the ground.
Fanolua-Pulepule also saved a try by holding up a Wavell forward over the line. He played so well, Marsden’s Walters Cup coach Matt Hartigan drafted him into his squad for the match one hour later.
Cruz Molo (Wavell SHS)
Wavell SHS had their backs to the wall for two-thirds of the game after an early send off but, but Molo did his best to be one and a half players. He did a little bit of this and a little bit of that in a high functioning middle forward unit for Wavell.
Toetu Misipati-Toetu (Marsden SHS)
It was not a game for Flash Dan fullbacks, but Misipati-Toetu showed nice touches, including his creation of a break which helped peggy-back Marsden into a position which saw Fanolua-Pulepule scored the winning try. He also made a try saving tackle on Wavell SHS fullback Silas Gardiner.
Knight Tanielu (Wavell SHS)
The big fella played strongly at prop, occasionally spinning and passing in contact, but mainly concentrating on post contact metres. He put Marsden SHS under pressure by drawing defenders to the middle third. He worked week in tandem with fellow front rower Bensen Manu.

Sonny Herdegen (Wavell SHS)
Herdegen looked like a Langer Trophy player in reserve grade in a performance which included a dashing run from the ruck and a one-on-one strip at a crucial time when Marsden had momentum. He featured an effortless left to right pass from the ground and in defence entangled himself around the ball.
Herdegen was unlucky to be held up over the line and also made a long distance break after scooping up the ball on the ground which led to his centre Carlos Ka scooting over. He was moved to halfback with 15 minutes to go and looked at home.
Tayshaarn Tonga (Marsden SHS)
It was a match for dummy halves with Tonga busy with his own running game off the back of his hard working middle forwards who included interchange warhorses Toma Oti and Jared Cook and start prop Cooper Young.
James Spicer (Wavell SHS)
Spicer was magnificent across a match which was only decided in the final seconds. Against big, physical rivals he ripped into his way, spinning and fighting hard to win the ruck and working overtime in defence.
Carlos Ka (Wavell SHS)
A little like Sonny Herdegen, Ka looked like a Langer Trophy player in reserve grade in limited opportunities he had in the centres.

Kanon Phillips (Wavell SHS)
Did we see the pending premiers in this competition after Wavell SHS produced a fast, upbeat game to defeat Marsden SHS comfortably? Steered by exciting junior halfback Charlie Webb, and with leg speed through the middle and speed merchants like Boston Nau and Noah Cameron out wide, this is a team to beat. But for all that, Wavell’s best was arguably No.17, Kanon Phillips, who straightened the attack in a calm, precise performance.
Marquis Sando (Marsden SHS)
Effort was no problem, but Marsden were simply beaten by a better side that scored the four of the first five tries of the game. But helping stem the tide was this interchange forward who gave his side a considerable lift. He gets a gold star.

Keyarn Pene (Wavell SHS)
If they were giving man of the match performances, Wavell centre Keyarn Pene would be a strong contender given his exit carries and defence on Cody Goulter’s side of the field.
Kobi Floro (Wavell SHS)
The biggest man on the field made his presence felt with a booming middle forward performance. He snared many post contact metres, and one of his close to the line charges gave his side depth in which to attack to the left which led to winger Ruben Webb scoring a vital try.
Zac Herdegen - and Timahna Tandy (Wavell SHS)
In what became a game of chess after Wavell had jumped out to a 12-nil advantage, Herdegen’s second half kicking game and control played a subtle but important role in a game that became nervously close for Wavell supporters. One of his towering bombs led to an error which gave Wavell field position to score a crucial second half try. Tandy also had a nice debut for the home side.
Charlie Dickson (Wavell SHS)
It was not a night for show ponies against a willing, bruising opposition, and Dickson was tailor made for the role. His contribution included a typical second effort performance near the tryline which saw him spin out of the defenders arms and plunge over next to the posts.
Maddox Goodwin and Jared Horne (Wavell SHS)
Recent schoolboy selection Goodwin and young veteran Horne had strong nights with their carries on the edge, while Horne did was defensively opposite and elite talent on Taylon To’a.
Tupou Francis (Marsden)
A tremendous young prospect, this rookie No.13 left nothing in the tank. He attacked with his defence, trying to force errors, and gave his all - and then some - carrying the ball. Marsden SHS has a very strong starting pack, but this bloke was the best of the bunch in round 2.
Benji Quinlan and Anthony Solomon (Marsden SHS)
Quinlan slotted into his bench role nicely and gave Marsden SHS a lift after Wavell had got a fly start to led 12-nil, and after an early error Solomon was a real effort man for his side as well coming on in the first half.
