The Langer Reserves competition is up and running for another season, with quality players left, right and centre putting pressure on the top Langer Trophy choices this season.
LANGER TROPHY SKIPS NAME MOST RESPECTED OPPONENT
It was a bumper start in round one which saw an array of first class performances, including the ones we highlight in our story below.
VJ Letalu (Keebra Park SHS)
South Coast representative winger Letalu finished Wednesday’s affair with a whopping 17 carries.
Yes he is a winger and yes he took 17 runs – that is not an error.
The dangerous, high flying winger will be pushing for selection in the Langer Trophy if he keeps producing games like this.
Justus Lowndes (Keebra Park SHS)
Burleigh Bears Under-17s halfback Lowndes was two players for Keebra on Wednesday, playing his heart out in the first half before being called up into the top side to don jersey No. 17.
He was crafty, playing a hand in both of Keebra’s first half tries.
Gab Salele’a (Keebra Park SHS)
Keebra’s trusted middle man Gab Salele’a, a lock or hooker, was a defensive monster from start to finish and played like it was his last game ever representing his school.
“He brings a ball of energy to the team and can be relied upon to make his tackles every time,” said head of rugby league Peter Norman said in praise.
Carlos Ka (Wavell SHS)
Carlos Ka looked right at home at the Southport Tigers, putting on an outstanding showing at centre.
His runs from the back fence were just what the doctor ordered when Keebra had momentum and his defence was impenetrable.
Jackson Globits (Wavell SHS)
Brothers junior Globits, a gun utility back who plays hooker but filled in at fullback to cover an injury, was superb.
He made a ton of metres returning kicks and organised the backline wonderfully.
Lachie Hill (Wavell SHS)
Every team needs a player like Lachie Hill.
A second rower, Hill’s defensive efforts were inspiring and his workrate led the way for the side.
Roko Bilish (PBC SHS)
Bulldozing prop Bilish, the Tweed Seagulls Connell Cup middle forward, was a big time performer in round one with his barnstorming carries thrusting the Reds forward.
Codey McConnell (PBC SHS)
The younger brother of Burleigh Bears whiz Bailey had a stunning start to the season at fullback.
Returning the ball he was dangerous, while being a trusted highball catcher and last line defender.
Caleb Cresswell (Marsden SHS)
Last Wednesday Marsden right centre Cresswell was a classy customer on Dolphin Oval, scoring a stunning individual try down the right touchline and producing a handful of big defensive plays.
Four sleeps later the utility back directed traffic from halfback in Logan Brothers’ 50-10 Nev Blair Shield victory over Norths.
Cresswell, Quinn Timperon and Reece Gorman are going to finish a lot of tries this season.
Levi Bannan (Marsden SHS)
A gun hooker but perhaps a better fullback?
Bannan evaded the first defender on almost every occasion and despite being taken back by the bigger Redcliffe boys, he was superb for the most part.
On one occasion, he blitzed two defenders with his lethal footwork before finding winger QuinnTimperon who flew down the left touchline to score a 80m beauty.
Bannan had the wind against him in the second half and did well to ensure Marsden kept Redcliffe scoreless.
Taysharn Tonga (Marsden SHS)
With Bannan holding down the fort at fullback, Tonga took charge at hooker and played a nice role with his running game.
Tonga’s passing was crisp, but his running game was the most impressive, the young gun flirting with the tryline when the Makos moved in.
The Eagles did well to deny him a try, but Tonga’s attacking game won’t be shut down for long. That is for sure.
Greg Pepe and Beau Molo (Redcliffe SHS)
Redcliffe’s prop powerhouse Pepe and his second rower Molowas were dynamic in the first stint and even more so in the second when they finished the game in style.
The powerful Pepe took two runs a set multiple times in the final quarter and led Redcliffe’s charge with some fearless carries late in the game when things were in the balance.
Molo was up for the battle as well against a sizable Makos park consisting of Cooper Young, Anthony Solomon, Tanei Heijames and Toma Oti.
Jordan Seuao (Redcliffe SHS)
The Eagles left wing had the midas touch in a steamy Wednesday afternoon bout against Marsden.
Seuao was mistake free, with a dash of flare when he got the chance on the left edge.
He shed tackles, kept a Marsden touch finder in with an acrobatic leap near the touchline, defended fiercely and looms as a threat on the wing or in the centres.
Rhico Markey (Caloundra SHS)
You can see Caloundra’s depth has improved this season when you have a player like fullback Markey in the reserves. He worked hard in the middle of the field, was energetic and a dangerous player.
Gideon Tanielu (Mabel Park SHS)
Logan brothers five-eighth Tanielu showed he is not playing around in his final year of schooling at Mabel Park SHS.
Against a gutsy Seahawks outfit, Tanielu shone his torch showing his team the way to victory.
Ethan O’Dea (Ipswich SHS)
One of the biggest defensive showings of the round came down the coast where O’Dea had an inspired display off the ball.
Tackling anything that moved, tireless lock O’Dea would’ve racked up over 20 tackles and hit hard and low.
Tyler Theuerkauf (Ipswich SHS)
The dangerous left centre scored an early try of the season contender at PBC, scorching down the left edge, busting four tackles before scoring.
Across the contest he was a consistent threat, but this showed the Ipswich coaches should they need, there is a ready made strike centre waiting in the wings.
