A terrific trio helped giant-killers WestMAC hit the high notes and claim an upset win while a breakdown young gun from Ormiston College were among a Super 20 of best players from round 2.

The TAS First XV rugby competition went up a gear last weekend when WestMAC defied the odds to beat Canterbury College 15-12.

CLUB RUGBY TEAMS OF THE WEEK FROM COLTS, PREMIER GRADE

WestMAC, seemingly the beneficiaries of playing powerful Ormiston College in round 1, challenged Canterbury with physical play at the breakdown which ultimately delivered them the victory.

Canterbury College will look to get on the board this weekend when they host John Paul College in what shapes up to be an exciting Logan City derby.
Across town, St Columban’s dealt with St Paul’s while Ormiston had a successful Pink Day celebration following their shut-out win over CHAC.

George Hobbs (Ormiston)

The left winger was to the fore last weekend with his hard line running getting Ormiston onto the front foot.

Talk about being keen to throttle forward, this bloke used his legs to power through contact and pound the CHAC defensive line.

He brought the physicality on defence as well.

Angus Plastow and Ashton Snell (Ormiston)

Like a demon, Plastow rucked Ormiston to victory and made some brilliant decisions at the breakdown. Snell was his right hand man who, across the course of the game, did a bit of everything on a Pink Day success.

Matt Winkleman (Ormiston)

Winkleman’s service out of scrum half was the starting point for Ormiston’s backs to start their attack.

His passing was on point all game, both his long balls and close range passing to his forwards.

But it was a tremendous spiral passing from the base of the ruck that led to Ormiston scoring their points out wide through their backs who ran wild in space.

Joey Hona (CHAC)

Hona stands up in good times and in bad, the open side flanker again leading by example as captain.

On a day where CHAC defended for much of the contest, Hona was up for the job and proved effective with his tackles.

Jack Grant (CHAC)

Hona’s No. 8 running mate Jack Grant was strong with the ball in hand, charging beyond the advantage line.

He had limited opportunities but when CHAC were on the attack, Grant was a vocal point.

Harry McDowell (WestMAC)

The fearless scrum half showed great composure and control across the game and added some crucial points to the board with his accurate goalkicking. He was influential in a huge result for the WestMAC rugby program.

Mitchell Ellis (WestMAC)

Loose forward Ellis was composed around the rucks, organised the defensive shape brilliantly and was a defensive menace.

The second year First XV warrior relished a starting opportunity and did not disappoint.

Samson Noffke (WestMAC)

The WestMAC flyhalf had the ball on a string with his tactical kicks.

A Javelin ace who is one of the best in his age group, Noffke used his boot to get WestMAC into the right spots where the work of their forwards manufactured an upset.

Seb Booth (St Columban’s)

From fullback to outside centre, this year 12 student led by example with massive defensive plays and strong carries with the ball.

He was the glue which kept the St Columban’s backline intact and there is none more responsible than Booth for repelling St Paul’s and keeping them scoreless.

Toby Parker (St Columban’s)

The St Columban’s second rower has had a brilliant start to the season, captaining the First XV to two straight wins.

He was a Second XV player last year but has got his side off to a flyer, and his leadership and actions on the paddock in round two were quality.

Alby Lyons (St Columban’s)

Mr versatile, Alby Lyons played No. 8 and ran himself to a standstill. Who is surprised?

Working hard all game in the rucks, at the lineout with his throws and everywhere else, when things weren’t going St Columban’s way, Lyons held his side together and propelled them forward.

Akeli Filipo (St Columban’s)

The exciting outside back shifted in one position into inside centre and showed ticker on defence, while being a brilliant link between his hardworking forwards and fast backline division.

The Year 12 student was top notch.

Tymothy Palupe (Canterbury)

Young veteran Palupe was at his brilliant best in Canterbury’s first outing of the season, inspiring his teammates with his relentless work across the park.

He was everywhere for 70 minutes.

Ben Stanley (Canterbury)

Stanley followed suit of his Year 12 leader Palupe, challenging the rucks and tackling his backside off at open side flanker.

The Year 11 student was terrific in his debut.

Alfie White and Adam Edwards (St Paul’s)

St Paul’s had a positive showing and leading the way were tireless flankers Edwards and White who tackled everything that came their way.

They led the way with their defence, and not far behind them was Nate Woodbury who muscled up on that side of the ball.
