Red Tracer wins the Tiara

RED Tracer provided a fitting finale to the 2012-13 season of Group 1 racing on two fronts when she powered away with yesterday's Tattersall's Tiara.

For starters, she is one of the most deserving Group 1 winners of the season.

Nine times she had been to a Group 1 race previously for a return of three minor placings. Twice she was denied in tight finishes during this year's Sydney carnival.

And secondly, Chris Waller rightly saddled the final major winner of the season, bringing his tally to nine and making him clearly Australia's leading Group 1 conditioner.

Barrier 16 may well have brought Red Tracer undone again yesterday, but confidently handled by Nash Rawiller, she overcame being a little wide in the run and proved clearly superior.

Streama finished best of the rest for second, with Floria again racing well for Peter Moody in finishing third.

Waller said the win was fully deserved for owners Geoff and Mary Grimish, who he described as two of the most generous people he had ever come across.

Waller is keen for Red Tracer to continue racing and not retire to stud.

"It takes so long to find these types of horses," he said.

"She hasn't been overtaxed and she's a sound, healthy horse, so she should definitely race on.

"Everyone knows she has been around the mark and there's not a person who would deny her winning a Group 1.

"It's been an amazing season, but it's not made possible by me. It's all the people I have around me and I'm very grateful for that."

Rawiller said Red Tracer left her rivals with no excuses.

"I thought I might as well stay where I was in the run, because no matter what I did I would have ended up wide in the run," he said.

"She did cover a lot of ground. Every horse had its chance to run her down and couldn't do it.

"She was simply too good. Some people say she is just a heavy tracker but the track wasn't heavy today. She has never gone better."

Streama's trainer Guy Walter, who also saddled fourth placegetter Skyerush, said the better horse on the day won.

"As it turned out, barrier one may not have been any advantage, but you can't take anything away from the winner. She's a deserving Group 1 winner," he said.

Moody said the plan had been to retire Floria to stud this year, but he would try and convince the owners to press on because he feels she is well up to Melbourne spring standard.

"She's a deadset miler so she's done a great job in these shorter races up here," Moody said.
