JOHN Thompson notched his first stakes success as a public trainer, as Michael Cahill declared Peron a live chance in Saturday’s Group 1 Tatts Tiara in the wake of yesterday’s Gai Waterhouse Classic.

Thompson only recently became a public trainer, opening the doors to other clients outside Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm.

This will be Peron’s final run for Nathan Tinkler. All of the Patinack horses will be transferred to Tinkler’s father Les and his Serene Lodge syndicate this week.

Peron was the headline act from a number of horses withdrawn from this month’s Magic Millions National Racehorse Sale by Patinack and the decision is likely to pay dividends for the family.

Peron was shunted wide coming to the turn and took about 100m to wind up, but when she did, the result was never in doubt.

“I got her into a nice spot but then they just pushed me out wide at about the 550m and it got her off balance,” Cahill said.

“It took her a while to balance up after that and she wanted to wander a bit. It might have looked different, but she didn’t show the same turn of foot as normal, because she wasn’t really getting through the track.”

Cahill wants dry weather in the lead up to the Tiara.

“If it dries out, she’s a super chance. If it’s wet again, then she’s probably an each way hope,” he said.

Thompson will monitor Peron’s recovery in the next day or so, but hopes to back up in the Tiara, a race that has always been the goal.

However, the path he’s had to take to get Peron to that race is different than first planned."

“It hasn’t been the ideal preparation because she’s missed out on getting a run in some good races twice,” Thompson said.

“Last year we had Pear Tart and she was able to get into the Guineas off a midweek win and then the Tatt’s Tiara.

“Peron is all over a better horse than Pear Tart but we just haven’t been able to get her into the same races.

“She just had too much class for them today and beat them easily.”

Thompson revealed Peron was almost a scratching owing to the heavy rated track.

“I was very dubious whether we would come here or not but I spoke to a few of the locals who said it would improve through the day,” he said.

Skating On Ice backed up her recent win on the Gold Coast with a terrific effort for second. Doubtfilly charged late for third, pushing Classics out of the placings.
