All Blacks still in Benji Marshall's sights after completing switch to Auckland Blues

BENJI Marshall knows it will be hard work to fulfil a childhood dream of playing for the All Blacks.

BENJI Marshall knows it will be hard work to fulfil a childhood dream of playing for the All Blacks.

Marshall, 28, put that target on hold for the second half of his life while forging a hugely successful career in rugby league.

It's back on the agenda after announcing a return to rugby on Saturday, via a two-year Super Rugby contract with the Blues.

In an interview on the Blues website, Marshall recalls he shared the same goal as his peers when growing up in Whakatane - to emulate the deeds of All Blacks backline stars in the 1990s such as Andrew Mehrtens, Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen.

``I have all these memories of watching those guys play and wanting to be like those guys.

``That dream obviously changed a bit when I started playing rugby league,'' he said.

``Then I got to represent the Kiwis, which was one of the best times of my life. Hopefully, if I perform well enough, I can get that opportunity with the All Blacks.''

Marshall admits shaking play-the-balls and other rugby league habits out of his system when his 11-year tenure with the Wests Tigers finishes next month will be a challenge.

Who has been the best code hopper?

He hopes the skills that took him to age group level New Zealand teams returns quickly but admits it won't be an easy process.

``It's important for me in making the transition that I learn the game, learn the new rules and get in there and train in different positions and see where I fit in properly.

``It's going to be hard work, no doubt, but it's definitely something I'm ready for.''

Blues coach Sir John Kirwan urged sceptics, who believed Marshall's signing was as much about attracting fans and sponsorship, to show patience with the former Kiwis captain.

Kirwan says it will take time to ascertain his best position and for his obvious leadership skills to emerge.

``It's going to be really tough for him. He will be scrutinised by everyone and he's not going to do it (on) day one,'' he said.
