THE RESULTS

Aspley QAFL Colts 13.17.95 def Redland Victoria Point 2.3.15

With back-to-back wins to start the season, Hornets coach Brett Atkins was pleased but noted there was still “plenty of growth and development to come from the group.’’

Sharks coach Aaron Christensen said turnovers hurt his side again, with Aspley scoring 90 per cent of the time they secured a turnover across the second, third and fourth quarters. “It is something we will continue to develop but credit to the boys, we had a lot of the play in the second half, although we just couldn’t capitalise on our pressure. The score probably doesn’t reflect the contest,’’ he said.

Broadbeach 5.10.40 def Labrador 3.7.25

Broadbeach fought hard for its win in a Gold Coast local derby against the Tigers, with Cats coach Tony Pollard giving his team’s effort a tick given the squad was down 13 players.

Morningside 12.6.78 def Maroochydore 4.4.28

Morningside coach Justin Lawrence said he loved the performance of his mid field engine room when the side established a match-defining first term lead. “I loved the mid field setting the tone in the first quarter which we won 36-nil.’’

Roos coach Rob Smith said despite the loss, the performance of young Prendergast was a highlight, as was the gallant effort by backman Hunter James.

Wilston Grange 16.13.109 def Noosa 3.1.19

Gorillas coach Darren Fazldeen was super proud of his boys to start the season with back-to-back wins against an improved Noosa. Noosa were a dangerous side but Wilston Grange were able to arrest the start and gain the upper hand. “We had to switch into gear quickly and get the game back on our terms,’’ he said. “We moved the ball well and really made them defend us.’’

Noosa coach Ben Archard said his team learned a valuable lesson around work rate and how important pre-seasons were at QAFL level. “We are a young side, with the majority on our list eligible for the 17s,’’ coach Archard said.

“So we will continue to build the more we play.’’

He praised his opponents, Wilston Grange, who he described as a benchmark side. “We need to get to that level in coming years.’’

Palm Beach Currumbin 12.10.82 def Mt Gravatt 5.3.33

Mt Gravatt coach David Greenaway said the lesson learned by his side was “you can’t take the foot off the peddle’’.

“If you do that, good sides will put multiple goals on you “if you are only slightly off,’’ he said.

“But I was really impressed with how our boys kept at it, taking the game on and not going into their shells.’’

PBC coach Glen Clarke said it was good to see improved ball movement. He said the group were also to control the tempo of a match better while the forward structures worked well.

Sherwood 12.7.79 def Surfers Paradise 6.12.48.

Magpies coach Ben Jaenke-Cain heaped praise on lock down defender Clem Boston in a match which was much closer than the scoreboard indicated.

Demons coach Dean Odewahne said there were huge signs of improvement despite a loss, and noted the Magpies would be one of the top sides this season.
