The Matildas’ epic 2023 World Cup run established a new benchmark for the women’s national football side.
Australia comfortably booked a place at July’s Paris Games, adding to a legacy that is now set in stone with a statue at the scene of one of their greatest triumphs.
Matildas great Heather Garriock said just a week before the Games that this was their “best opportunity” to medal at an Olympics, even without their superstar Sam Kerr.
However US great Julie Foudy immediately offered an opposing view, insisting no Kerr, no Matildas.
That proved somewhat true as the Matildas slipped to a 3-0 loss to Germany in their opening match, prompting questions about their fitness and preparation.
Not even a heart-stopping 6-5 win over Zambia could overcome the sorry start, with the 2-1 defeat to the USA that followed ending their campaign early.
Even rival codes were admitting to riding on the Matildas’ coattails, with the rugby sevens squad opening up about their friendly rivalry.

POOLS
GROUP A: France, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand
GROUP B: USA, Zambia, Germany, Australia
GROUP C: Spain, Japan, CAF 1, Brazil
The Aussie women’s team, which is expected to undergo a generational change in the coming years, avoided landing in a group with host nation France and World No.1 Spain.
They faced powerhouses USA and Germany, losing 3-0 to the latter in their opening match.
In the wake of that opening defeat, Socceroos great Robbie Slater urged the Matildas to forget the hype and focus on football.
They bounced back with a 6-5 win over Zambia thanks to late Michelle Heyman heroics, prompting concerns as coach Tony Gustavsson outlined his plans for the clash against USA.
The Matildas entered the Games with one of the country’s most recognisable brands after a remarkable surge in popularity over recent years.
They also have an army of support staff, one not even the Boomers can compete with.
WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE?
July 25: Germany 3 d Australia 0 in Marseille
July 28: Aus 6 d Zambia 5 in Nice
July 31: USA 2 d Australia 1 in Marseille

WHAT IS THE MATILDAS’ SQUAD?
The full squad was confirmed in June.
In March 2024 coach Tony Gustavsson admitted “some very good players” will be overlooked for the Olympic squad, as the Matildas brace for a changing of the guard, with several new faces emerging.
Veteran Michelle Heyman even spoke of how the squad is now being supported in multiple ways.
Just before the Games coach Tony Gustavsson opened up about his ride with the Matildas and why he hopes 2024 will be different.
