Rugby Sevens may have only been part of two Olympic Games so far but Australia’s tale is already a winding one.
The men’s and women’s national sides entered Paris 2024 with similar ambitions but vastly different histories.
For the women, there was the lure of recapturing the glory of 2016 when they stormed to gold.
They crashed back to reality four years later but, armed with a fleet of young stars, reset their target for Paris – however they eventually had to settle for fourth after losing the bronze medal match to USA 14-12.
The men, meanwhile, have failed to truly fire – twice bundled out before the medal matches – and this time around failed in their bronze medal clash with South Africa, with skipper Nick Malouf sent off.

WHAT ARE THE SCHEDULES?
WOMEN
Australia was in Pool B alongside Ireland, Great Britain and South Africa.
The 12 teams competing were: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Fiji, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, USA, South Africa and Uruguay.
Australia won all three pools matches before crushing Ireland in the quarter-finals.
Australia’s women’s side qualified after finishing in the top four in the 2022–23 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.
MEN
Australia was in Pool B alongside Argentina, Samoa and Kenya.
The 12 teams competing were: Australia, Argentina, Samoa, Fiji, France, Kenya, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, USA, South Africa and Uruguay.
Pool matches started on July 24, two days before the opening ceremony, and run until July 27.
Australia edged Samoa 21-14 to open their campaign, and then beat Kenya 21-7 and the USA 18-0 to reach the semi-finals, however lost to South Africa in the bronze medal match.
Australia’s men’s side qualified after finishing in the top four in the 2022–23 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, and claimed third at the Hong Kong Sevens in April.

WHAT IS THE PERFORMANCE HISTORY AT THE GAMES?
WOMEN
After previous efforts to have rugby sevens included in the 1932 and 2012 Games, the code finally won the green light for Rio 2016.
Australia’s women finished top of their pool, ahead of Fiji, USA and Colombia, before trouncing Spain 24-0 in the quarters.
They then beat Canada 17-5 before taking gold with a 24-17 victory over New Zealand.
In 2020 the Aussies finished second in the pool stages behind USA, before bowing out 14-12 to Fiji in the final eight clash.
In 2024 the Aussies again went without a medal after losing 14-12 to USA in the bronze match.
MEN
Australia’s men finished third in their pool in 2016, behind South Africa and France, but sneaked through to the quarter-finals, losing 22-5 to South Africa.
In Tokyo 2020 Australia claimed third in the group behind New Zealand and Argentina but were bundled out in the quarters 19-0 by Fiji.
In 2024 they lost 26-19 to South Africa with a bronze medal on the line.
