Wavell State High School were left to ponder a season of near misses after falling to St Mary’s Toowoomba in the final round of the Allan Lager Cup.

Just two weeks after upsetting Gold Coast powerhouse Keebra Park, Wavell fizzled to successive defeats and end their season with a 1-4 record.

It was a case of too little too late for Wavell as St Mary’s scored off their opening set and never looked back in a drought-breaking 26-18 victory.

The Toowoomba boys have been guilty of letting leads slip this season but coach Rob Anderson’s pre-game address ensured there would be no mistakes this time.

“We spoke a bit about that before the game and how it’ll be the last time our year 12 boys play at home,” Anderson said.

“So I think the players really got on board with that and worked hard for each other,”

A blistering start saw St Mary’s enter the sheds with a 14-0 lead and two quick tries after the break all but guaranteed a winning end to their otherwise disappointing campaign.

Wavell, however, had other ideas and bagged three lightning quick tries to hush the vocal Toowoomba crowd.

A last-gasp raid could’ve seen the margin cut to 4 with minutes remaining but, as had been the case all afternoon, aggressive defence poor handling proved Wavell’s downfall.

“We’ve been fading in the back end of games a bit and that showed again when they came back with a few late tries,” Anderson said.

“We only played for 50 minutes of the game but it’s a good experience for our boys and they hung in a lot longer than they have in the past.”

Wavell and St Mary’s finish fifth and sixth respectively with one win apiece and Wavell ahead on points.
