Why Paul McGregor believes Phil Gould can be the man to save the Dragons

Dragons coach Paul McGregor doesn’t just welcome Phil Gould’s review, he believes it’s what exactly what they need to help pick up the pieces of their shattered season.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor says the club needs to be held accountable for their poor 2019 season and claims Phil Gould could be the answer.

St George finished their season with a 26-14 win over the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium to see off veterans Gareth Widdop and Jeremy Latimore on a positive note.

However, with an impending review coming for the Red V, McGregor admitted the club needed to be held accountable for their poor season.

The Dragons made it to the second week of the finals in 2018 but have this year finished in 15th spot.

He said the upcoming off-season would give the club some chance to reflect and learn from the year.

“Just to learn from what didn’t work this year and just as a group of men understand we’ve got to be accountable for the season we’ve had,” McGregor said.

“In life, you get obstacles in your way and you just have to work through them.

“This year has just been one after another.

“We’re looking forward to the guys having a break. We’ve got some very good players in this team.”

He said had relied on people for advice but believed an external review was needed to address the issues they faced this season.

“I’ve got people I look to for advice,” McGregor said.

“I just feel we needed a full review and an external review and that wasn’t only my thought but the club’s thought.

“When teams don’t finish in the top eight and finish in the bottom eight, your reviews a lot deeper.

“Last year, we obviously had a review but that was just internally.

“We all thought this one needs to be done externally.”

He said Phil Gould’s involvement in the review came because of his knowledge of the game.

“I’m the harshest critic of myself,” he said.

“I don’t need anyone else throwing it at me.

“I need to look at ways I need to fix.

“I think, whether it’s Gus or whoever, it needs to be someone.

“When you look at someone like Gus, he’s just very educated person that’s got a bigger knowledge than most in the game.”
