Gold Coast’s season of misery comes to an end following 24-16 loss to St George Illawarra

The worst season in Gold Coast history has come to an end at last, with the Titans falling 24-16 to St George Illawarra to finally end the pain.

Gold Coast players, staff and fans will finally be glad it’s all over.

The sun set on the Titans worst season ever last night as they claimed the unenviable title of this year’s wooden spooners.

They had the chance to finish their season from hell on a positive note playing the 15th-placed Dragons at home but not even they could find a win against their struggling opposition.

It wasn’t pretty but St George finally found a win to knock the final nail in the coffin on the Titans season, in a 24-16 win at Cbus Super Stadium last night.

At least the 11,274 fans at Robina - at times - had something to cheer about as the terrible Titans didn’t die wondering.

The Gold Coast kids showed there are still signs of life at the club led by Jai Arrow (one try), Tanah Boyd (two tackle busts) and Philip Sami (one try).

They showed glimpses of the potential in this playing roster but as much as you can sugar-coat it, they were simply and woefully underwhelming this year.

With just four wins from 24 games, it was their worst win-rate in the club’s history while they finished the year with their second fewest tries scored and close to their least amount of points in a season.

The players, as well as their fans, could not have been more keen to see Mad Monday finally arrive and put an end to their 2019 season, to start preparations for the dawn of this new era at the club.

Incoming coach Justin Holbrook can’t arrive on the Gold Coast soon enough while the Dragons now face a daunting review, with the help of NRL supremo Phil Gould over the coming weeks,

The young talent coming through the ranks of the Titans should give Holbrook something to smile about.

Future leader of the club, Jai Arrow, opened the scoring last night with his first try of the season while Tanah Boyd was impressive in both attack and defence.

The 19-year-old came within millimetres of scoring his first try in just his second NRL game had it not been knocked out by Dragons forward Korbin Sims.

It was a tight tussle in the first half with both sides only managing a try apiece going into the break.

After a 50-minute arm wrestle, the game finally opened up on the back of a tiring defence and Ben Hunt capitalised for the visitors with a double.

Retiring Dragons star Gareth Widdop finished his NRL career with 1003 career points.

Meanwhile Titans fullback Michael Gordon played his best brand of footy right to the very end last night and will have been glad to finish the way he did.
