JUST four days away from the NRL season opener, anticipation from fans is at an all-time high with the NRL experiencing a 12 per cent surge in club memberships.
More than 215,000 fans will begin the season as club members, with the NRL’s 2016 catchcry ‘Be There When History Happens” already gaining traction.
Twelve of the 16 NRL clubs have experienced an increase in membership figures, with Cronulla, Penrith and not surprisingly, the premiers North Queensland, securing the greatest percentage rise in paid-up members.
Despite dipping below their 31,113 members of 2015, South Sydney continue to lead the membership race with 29,401 devoted supporters.
But it’s the Sharks, on the back of a shrewd recruitment drive by coach Shane Flanagan and a slick marketing and membership campaign by club management, who with their 9,465 members, have recorded an incredible 69.3 per cent increase.
Cronulla chief executive Lyall Gorman is confident the club can breakthrough the 10,000 member mark this season.
A determined bid by the Panthers to attract an increase in memberships, with affordable packages for all ages, has resulted in a 36.9 per cent rise ahead of their opening round clash with Canberra on Saturday.
The Panthers currently boast 12,545 members.

As was the case for the Rabbitohs following their 2015 premiership success, the Cowboys have enjoyed an accelerated 34.4 per cent rise in members in the wake of their title success last October.
The NRL are confident their 2016 marketing campaign will encourage fans to be part of the action this year, by becoming a member of their favourite club.
“Membership is an ongoing focus for the NRL and the clubs,’’ an NRL spokesperson said.
“We have taken a collaborative approach, working with the clubs to consistently grow membership and the positive figures for 2016 show that the approach is working.
“Our 2016 marketing campaign is based on the concept that there is nothing better than being at the game. And club membership is still the most affordable way to see your team.’’
