Anthony Milford has been put out of his misery at the Broncos with the club reportedly telling him straight he won’t get a new contract.

Milford’s future has been an ongoing saga this season on the back of the Broncos’ halves crisis and accusations he hasn’t played to the expected level of a player reportedly earning $1 million per-year.

Milford’s Broncos contract expires at the end of the 2021 season and he will need to find a new home for the start of the 2022 NRL season.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters was transparent earlier this year when he declared publicly the 26-year-old had not proven he deserved a new contract extension offer.

Now the situation has reportedly been resolved with the Broncos making a final decision on his future.

The writing has been on the wall for Milford in recent months after he was twice axed to reserve grade. The club has also signed Souths halfback Adam Reynolds for next year and have publicly stated they have plans to shift Kotoni Staggs to five-eighth having signed him to a long-term deal earlier this year.

The Courier-Mail’s Peter Badel reported Thursday night Milford’s exit is now official.

“It’s over. $1 million playmaker Anthony Milford, the highest paid player in Broncos history, has been shown the door by Brisbane,” Badel posted on Twitter.

“He has been informed today he will not be offered a new deal at Brisbane. The cleanout continues.”

Badel reported in The Courier-Mail Brisbane’s new football boss Ben Ikin was the man to deliver the news to Milford’s management.

The news came just minutes after the Broncos confirmed unwanted forward Matt Lodge has been released to join the New Zealand Warriors immediately.

Milford, meanwhile, is suddenly one of the biggest stars on the open market.

The former Queensland State of Origin star earlier this month underwent surgery and is expected to be available for selection in coming weeks.

Milford has previously been linked with the Sharks and Titans.

Reports last month suggested the Titans had already begun talking to Milford’s management. He is reportedly facing a significant pay cut to find a new club for the 2022 season.

The turbulent roster management in Brisbane this year has plunged the Broncos into free-fall with some of the club’s biggest names already told they are not wanted next year.

Tevita Pangai Jr and Jamayne Isaako were earlier this year spotted speaking to Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire.

The Broncos’ clean-out may have only just begun.
