Rugby league fans looking for the next superstar should tune into this weekend’s Mal Meninga Cup decider.

The under 18s competition that nurtured rising Broncos halves Tom Dearden and Tanah Boyd will climax on Sunday when Tweed Heads battle Wynnum-Manly for premiership glory and there’s one name on everyone’s lips — Reece Walsh.

A Queensland’s under 16s captain last year, Walsh rose to prominence through junior club Nerang Roosters before making a name himself through the Queensland Murri.

The Keebra Park fullback trains with Brisbane’s under 18s emerging squad but has caused a stir with his form for Tweed Heads.

Walsh showed devastating pace and footwork to score either side of halftime during the Seagulls’ 24-16 semi final win over Souths-Logan and will be Tweed Heads’ X-factor from fullback in the big dance.

He’ll be matched by Wynnum-Manly fullback Braden Whittaker, a talented Hervey Bay junior who can also play halfback and hooker.

The forwards battle will be spearheaded by rival backrowers Juwan Compain and Tahu Kingi, both of whom have represented Queensland under 16s, while prop JJ Clarkson is one to watch after scoring two tries for Wynnum-Manly during their 20-16 win over Tweed Heads back in Round 5.

Wynnum-Manly averaged more than six tries per game in the regular season but Tweed Heads have momentum on their side after edging the previously unbeaten Magpies.
