U18 BOYS DIVISION 1: BRISBANE CAPITALS DEF CAIRNS MARLINS 89-77

The Brisbane Capitals have escaped from jail once again to earn a comeback victory over the Cairns Marlins and clinch a semi-finals match up with the Townsville Heat tomorrow.

After an impressive performance against the Southern Districts Spartans yesterday, the Capitals only needed a win over the Marlins to seal a top two spot.

However, it was Cairns who came out the more desperate team with the Marlins jumping out to a double digit lead in the first half.

But Geordan Papacostas again led from the front as the Capitals found their form and shut the Marlins Down in the second half to record a 12-point victory.

Papacostas had 30 points to back up his 39 points against the Spartans yesterday while Rafferty Morris and Tama Tuhi had 15 points each.

Kane Runnalls had 28 for the Marlins.

Gold Coast have kept their undefeated season rolling following a dominant second half against the Cairns Dolphins this afternoon at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre.

With top spot already sealed, the Waves struggled to pull away from the gritty Cairns side early on as the Dolphins answered most of the home side’s runs in the first half.

But in the second half, the Waves defence and hot shooting proved too much as they recorded a 30-point victory, to win all five games in the pool stages.

Katelyn Donovan and Lilly Rotunno led the scoring for the Waves with 20 points each, while Jess Petrie had 19.

Queensland North star Andria Heard was impressive for the Dolphins with 28 points.

The Gladstone Power and Gold Coast Breakers tipped-off day three of the State Under-18 Championships with a high-scoring display where neither team could separate themselves from the other.

In their last pool games for the week, both teams had multiple contributors on the offensive end and the result came down to the last second, but the match finished in a draw.

The Breakers had six players score in double figures led by Mehki O’Riley with 22 points while the Power had four players reach double figures with Benjamin Knight leading the way with 30 points.

Owen Gardiner also scored 24 for Gladstone.

The South West Metro Pirates have clinched a spot in the semi-finals after a 64-point demolition job on the Brisbane Capitals in the final pool game of their tournament.

After a draw with the Southern Districts Spartans yesterday, the Pirates needed a big win to grab second spot in their pool and they came out firing from the opening tip.

South West pushed the pace and pressured the Capitals defensively as they looked to extend the lead to the margin they need to have a chance of making finals.

Brisbane were able to stay in the game in the first half but the Pirates caught fire in the second half and finished with the lead they needed to earn a semi-finals spot.

Lil Dart top scored for South West with 22 points while teammate Destiny Mino had 20.
