“I was really happy with the way the boys performed,’’ said PBC coach John Costello, whose outfit was missing a number of players.

“We really wanted to come out and assert ourselves.

“We won it last year, and there is still a bulk of that team in this group, so that mentality to start the game well and keep our standard high was really important.

“And I think we did that. We scored two goals early which set things up.’’

’Palm Beach Currumbin put a down payment on victory with an imperious first half performance that established a 2-nil advantage.

It could have been more, but twice Helensvale SHS goalkeeper Hayden Mackenzie produced fantastic saves.

And Mackenzie’s brave effort continued into the second half when he saved a penalty shoot by lunging to his left. Trailing by the two goals, Helensvale actually rallied in the lead-up to halftime to challenge PBC, but the PBC defence was equal to the task.

“It was a good experience, being our first semi-final in the boys division,’’ said Helensvale SHS coach Lachlan McConell.

“I thought the boys put in a really good showing in the first half, the last 20 minutes of the first half.

“’He said the team needed that experience to realise “we are here to match it with the big boys.

“But we are really starting to set ourselves up to put the best foot forward.’’

Cavendish Road lead 2-nil and were on top, but PBC’s recovery was sustained in the second half as they mounted movement to hustle the Cav Road defenders.Tate Baldwin ultimately scored for PBC to reduce the margin to 2-1 and it was on for young and old.

Things were even more tense when Cav Road had a player red carded in the second half.

“There were plenty of momentum swings throughout the game,’’ said Cavendish Road coach Darryl Cash.

“I think we had a fair bit of control in the first half, but we all know a 2-nil lead is not a strong one.

“The Palm Beach boys fought really hard to get back into the game and we stuck to our guns and tried to keep them out as much as possible.

“Luckily for us the whistle went before they could do any more damage.’’

PBC coach John Costello said he was delighted with the effort of his side which was not at full strength.

“The boys went down early and had to try and fight their way back into it,’’ Costello said.

“I was really proud of their second half. We are hurting but will be back next year.’’

At 2-all the match tightened up and it was anyone’s game until Morrison’s winning strike.

“We were 2-nil down after a couple of good goals by them. I can’t fault the girls’ effort to get back into the game and we were just a little bit unlucky at the end,’’ Cronk said.

Kelvin Grove coach Jess Condon said Chancellor put up an outstanding fight to the death, but noted her team’s composure.
