REPLAY: Keebra Park SHS v Wavell SHS in the Langer Trophy
Did Keebra Park SHS score the quickest try in rugby league history tonight?
Possibly, with second rower Phil Hakaraia-Ngamotu scoring around seven seconds.
It was a startling start on a night which saw Keebra Park stretch to a 18-nil lead before Wavell mounted a spirited recovery to take the game down to the wire.
Ben Te Kura’s second try 10 minutes from the end for Wavell reduced Keebra Park’s lead to 18-10 and it was game on. Then late debut winger George Henry scored again for Wavell, but the it was too late.
Earlier, after Keebra’s shock start, Keebra Park flyer Elijah Lui swept in for three tries in 12 minutes as his side raced to a 18-nil advantage.
Wavell were enjoying its first attacking ball when Lui swooped, running 75m untouched to give his team a 10-nil advantage.
Lui then scored his second try when Keebra Park SHS outflanked their rivals with a wide passing movement, with Deontae Perese ball putting his runners on the outside of their men.
Then Lui, who looked more like he should have been at the Olympic Games on the athletics track than at Wavell SHS, blazed after a kick ahead to score - again in the left corner.
At 18-nil Wavell had to gather themselves - and they did.
Despite Keebra Park SHS putting bodies into tackles, Wavell SHS continued to fight for the play the ball, with Damascus Neemia’s leg drive and Ben Te Kura’s long stride battering their side forward.
Their reward came when Te Kura launched himself onto a pass from his No.6 Karl Oloapu to score, reducing the margin to 18-6.
And into the second half Wavell SHS upped the ante around power running by debut winger George Henry-Monaei, No.13 Tyrell Feaveai and comeback kid Junior Taungatua.
Keebra Park SHS were called upon to man the pumps in defence as Wavell SHS fought hard.
Te Kura’s second drive reduced the margin to 18-10 with 10 minutes to play.
Wavell dummy half Tyrell Waaka-Rhind also led his team’s revival against a physical Keebra Park.
REPLAY: Keebra Park v Wavell in the Langer Reserves
Keebra Park SHS had a nice start to the afternoon, winning the reserves 24-18.
Wavell SHS speed merchant Kallum Stacey-Weatherall opened the scoring with a side-stepping solo effort beside the posts.
He stepped once, then twice before plunging over after the Keebra Park defence had been scattered.
But Keebra Park hit back in the far left corner, with Ollie Hund getting his team on the board and seized control into the second half.
After Keebra Park halfback Jaxon Yow skipped away to score beneath the posts against the run of play, the Coast team were never headed.
They got out to a 24-6 advantage, and despite two late tries to Wavell - by Harri Sykes and Prinston Esera - Keebra Park were not in danger of a late loss.
REPLAY: Wavell v Keebra Park in the Walters Cup
Keebra Park SHS made it two from two with a 24-6 Walters Cup victory.
A rousing try from Lama Afu 10 minutes from time gave Keebra Park SHS complete control after they had grabbed the steering wheel into the second half.
It was a cracking Walters Cup start, with blockbusting Keebra Park SHS centre Dorian Lotaki bursting through to score early, only for Wavell to strike back after a flow of possession.
Winger John Pokia scored for Wavell following a slick backs ball movement after the Wavell pack had made no headway against a physical, hard hitting Keebra Park.
Keebra meant business without the ball, shouldering some brutal hits toward the opposition, and it took slick ball movement by No. 6 Oliver Jones and fullback Gus Harvey to beat the man, enabling Pokia to slide over in the corner.
But shortly before halftime, Keebra Park again asserted themselves in attack ball position, with Jerricho Bell storming to the tryline after coming hard on the burst.
