Langer Cup 2020: Xavier and De La Salle Va’a feature in livestream Langer Cup clash between St Mary’s and Wavell SHS

Langer Cup 2020: Xavier and De La Salle Va’a to feature in livestream Langer Cup clash between St Mary’s College and unbeaten Wavell SHS tonight.

St Mary's College brothers Xavier and De La Salle Va’a are used to going an extra mile – on and off the field.

The boys, who have been snapped up by the Brisbane Broncos, thought nothing of the daily 84km commute from their home town of Dalby, west of Toowoomba, to attend school at St Mary’s.

The brothers now live close-by in Toowoomba, but they are still on the road, this time travelling the 120km distance from the Darling Downs to Red Hill to train at the Broncos once a week.

But being country kids, travelling a country mile is par for the course.

The brothers are both props with high work rates, although they are not identical in style despite playing the same position.

“Xavier is a lot heavier and plays a traditional front rowers game through the middle,’’ said St Mary’s Langer Cup coach Matt Jahnke.

“Sal has an offload in him. He is also taller with longer leviers.’’

Xavier plays in St Mary’s Langer Cup side while younger brother De La Salle is a member of the Saints Walters Cup outfit, although the boys were on a collision course to play in the Langer Cup team together in 2021.

The pair were maintaining Dalby’s fine league tradition as an upstanding football nursery.

Carl Webb, a former Origin and Test forward, hailed from Dalby and along with NRL warhorse Andrew McCullough and his father, Graeme, who was a fine player for Brisbane Brothers in the BRL days.

Ironically the Va’a brothers are boxers, just as Carl Webb was.

St Mary’s College face an important match against Wavell SHS tonight in a match to be livestreamed at www.couriermail.com.au

Coach Jahnke wants his team to improve its ball control.

Wavell SHS were unbeaten after three games with two wins and a draw.
