Barron River’s vice-captain Adam Trewin bashed an undefeated 66 runs from 73 balls to lead his side to a thrilling win on the final wicket against Rovers.

Travelling side Barron River won the toss and chose to bowl first at Griffiths Park on Saturday.

Despite early breakthroughs, Rovers opener Joshua Chadwick played a vital innings of 57 runs from 65 balls, including nine boundaries and a six.

However, the Rovers middle order fell victim to Barron River’s captain Tim Ward, who claimed 4-23 runs from six overs.

Ward was responsible for the dismissals of Rovers coach and former teammate Andrew Phelps, captain Marcus Berryman, wicketkeeper Kael Newcombe and spinner Mark Ellis, with the side still managing to climb to a strong score of 8-172 from 40 overs.

“He bowled beautifully,” Trewin said.

“He’s too selfless, not many people would take themselves off after getting four (wickets) especially if they are the skipper.”

In response, Barron River’s chase quickly became dire.

Rovers’ bowling brigade, including fiery pacemen Brenton Edwards, Marcus Berryman and brothers duo Henry and Thomas King reduced the visitors to 5-58.

Phelps snatched an outstanding catch from point for the wicket of in-form Barron River batsman David Coulthard (89* runs not out against Norths).

Scoring machine Trewin – despite copping a brutal shot by Edwards early – stood firm and began catapulting a daring fightback.

“I just tried to play each ball how it comes,” Trewin said.

“There’s no point trying to pick a bowler to target, it was more pick a ball and focus on an area that I was comfortable with.”

With pressure mounting, Trewin anchored the chase with support from experienced cricketer Fredrick Pittorino (22 runs from 20 balls), helping stabilise the innings.

With wickets from seven different bowlers, Rovers Aaron Lock (3-8 from three overs) was the most damaging late, knocking over Pittorino, Timothy Tosh and Charlie Howard to put his side at a strong advantage with the opposition at 8-132.

“I trusted Jordan (Fulton) to hold his wicket,” Trewin said.

“It’s not the first time he’s been in a situation like that. He’s my teammate so I backed him in. Sean Prior coming in at 10, the way he came out to bat helped take the pressure off me.”

Trewin – who is now the fourth leading run scorer of the competition with 206 runs – kept the chase alive.

The match came down to the final wicket with Barron River securing the victory with nine balls to spare, finishing at 9-173 from 38.3 overs.

“The way we fought back, especially after losing a chunk of games in a row,” he said.

“To comeback with a win against a very strong team like Rovers was great for the team.”

Trewin’s hit home the winning runs in a resolute innings which proved the difference, as Barron River completed one of the club’s most memorable wins in recent history.

Elsewhere, Atherton bounced back at Loder Park, with Logan Poggioli, Chris Adams and Alexander Nasser leading a victory over league-leaders Norths despite a strong 50 runs by Benjamin McCartney.

Mulgrave made light work of Cassowary Coast, bowling the Cyclones all out for 76 runs before chasing the target in just 12 overs.
