Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league grand finals have been decided

The Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league grand finals have been decided, with Marsden SHS, Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Coombabah SHS and Forest Lake SHS sharing the four premierships.

The Broncos Challenge schoolboy rugby league grand finals were decided last night at Carina.

Marsden SHS claimed the Walters Cup, Palm Beach Currumbin the Hancock Cup, Coombabah SHS the Renouf Shield and Forest Lake State High School the Broncos Old Boys Trophy.

MARSDEN SHS VERSUS WAVELL SHS, Walters Cup

Marsden State High School iced a fabulous season when they claimed their grand final, 30-6 over Wavell SHS.

The best side all season, Marsden produced a nice blend of forward power and backline play to win.

Representative second rower Eli Tuli was a handful on the left edge while sniping dummy half Tyree Bowman feasted off the back of his forwards.

Beyond the halves, Marsden centre Stoltman threatened.

Marsden led 18-6 at the break and the players roared at each other to maintain the rage as they left the dressing room to resume play in the second half.

They would have known they were confronting a never-say-die Wavell side which a week earlier produced an extraordinary comeback to qualify for the grand final.

But there was no wet sail finish from Wavell tonight.

Even after a sin-binning, Marsden never lost traction.

Hooker Tyree Bowman’s contribution in capitalising on his team’s forward power this season should not be understated.

Deservedly Bowman received the man of the man from former Broncos premiership winner Mick DeVere.

Wavell were beaten fair and square, but there was no shame in coming second in this high standard tournament and their players will live to fight another day.

FOREST LAKE SHS VERSUS PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN, Broncos Old Boys trophy

Forest Lake SHS forward Duquan Talaepa produced three match winning plays to drive his school to a thrilling Yr 7 grand final school boys win over Palm Beach Currumbin SHS.

Forest Lake won 14-6, claiming the Broncos Old Boys Trophy after PBC went to the brink of stealing the silverware from them.

With five-eight Anthony Solomon in glittering early form Forest Lake raced to a 10-0 lead after two tries to winger Dwayne Taki.

For most of the first half Forest Lake were also driving numbers into tackles and looked bound for victory.

But fleet-of-foot PBC rattled Forest Lake several times in the second half and almost hit the front against tiring opponents.

That is when Forest Lake interchange forward Talaepa stepped up.

Twice he made critical tackles before scoring the matching winning try at a time when PBC were lining up to overtake their rivals.

On one occasion Talaepa held up a rampant PBC forward Mason Nelson and not long after he forced a changeover of possession.

Then came his match winning try.

PBC soared back into the match through the speed of their little men, but prop Hiawa King should be noted for his forward play.

Forest Lake prop Apiti-Salanoa also shone.

COOMBABAH SHS VERSUS FOREST LAKE SHS, Renouf Cup

The Renouf Shield is headed south to Coombabah SHS after the Gold Coast school beat Forest Lake SHS 36-16 in Yr 8 rugby league.

Coombabah responded best after half time after trailing 12-6.

The side produced a beautifully balanced game to challenge Forest Lake in the forwards and out flank them on the edges.

The Coombabah forwards upped the ante in the second half paving the way.

Busy half back Coby Black laid a deposit on victory with a try midway thought the second half to lift his side to a 26-12 lead.

During the second half prime movers Summer, Dyson and man of the match Whiu-Hopa paved the way for the winners while fullback Symonds was industrious.

Forest Lake SHS should hold their heads up as it was an enormous achievement for them to make the final.

The flame flickered for Forest Lake when centre Lasei scored his second try to reduce the margin to 10 points.

Soon after, as Forest Lake mounted one final surge, the Coombabah defence stood up and forced a turnover that lead to centre Petricevich running 90 metres to score.

In the first half both teams traded tries, with Forest Lake crossing on 3 occasions and Coombabah twice.

Forest Lake fullback Niyonyishu was excellent in a beaten side.

PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN VERSUS COOMBABAH SHS, Hancock Cup

Palm Beach Currumbin came back from the dead to steal the Hancock Cup from beneath the nose of Coombabah SHS.

PBC won the Yr 9 Schoolboy Grand Final 24-18 with man of the match Reico Ratana scoring with minutes to go.

Coombabah led 18-6, but an amped up PBC forward pack rallied from the back blocks.

The match featured a willing forward confrontation as Coombabah attempted to wrestle back the initiative that had been seized by their rivals.

A big moment in the match came when PBC’s Tyler King produced an individual charge to score and spark a recovery.

It was a tremendous contest between two evenly matched teams.

Both packs drew a line in the sand and there was plenty of bravery as players stepped in where angels feared to tread.
