PBC v ST MARYS

THE sight of newly-signed halfback Toby Sexton slicing junior rivals apart will have Titans staff beaming after the Palm Beach Currumbin star steered his side into the next stage of NRL’s National Schoolboys Cup.

Fresh from signing with his hometown franchise last week, Sexton orchestrated a crushing 50-6 win over St Mary’s Toowoomba to launch PBC into the South Queensland semifinals.

Seven goals and three try assists make for appealing stats and Gold Coast culture chief Mal Meninga will be rightly praised for keeping Sexton away from the clutches of cashed-up Sydney clubs.

The Tweed Seagulls junior wasn’t the only star on the paddock with Brendan Piakura, Izzy Higgins and Josh Bevan leading the charge for a rampant PBC pack.

Piakura’s combination with Sexton saw the lock bag a first-half double while fellow try-scorer Higgins and Bevan were unstoppable in contact.

Higgins’ slick unders line to score untouched in the 20thminute opened up an 18-0 lead and when Piakura bagged his second just before the main break, St Mary’s were already hanging their heads.

Two-try centre Caleb Hodges was equally impressive down the left edge with interchange forward Jordan Tauali’I another standout for the Reds.

Keanu Wright-Dunrobin played a lone hand in St Mary’s backline while Coby Fechner did his best in a backpedalling pack.

PBC coach Aaron Zimmerle was pleased with the result but made note of St Mary’s willingness at the death.

“We were faster around the ruck, we really wanted to run them off their feet,” Zimmerle said.

“I honestly love St Mary’s being a part of this competition – they are so determined and turn up and give it their all.

“But we had a near-full strength side today and I though we played really well.”

WAVELL v IPSWICH

Wavell State High are one step closer to national glory after dashing Ipswich State High’s hopes in a golden-point quarterfinal boiler.

In a hotly anticipated rematch of their Allan Langer Cup clash won by Ipswich, it was Wavell who emerged victorious 24-22 off the boot of five-eighth Rhys Timms, who kicked four goals including the match winner at Kougari Oval.

Timms’ extra time penalty goal capped a remarkable see-sawing game that produced as many highlights as it did coach-killing moments and Ipswich will be kicking themselves for throwing away an early 12-point lead in knockout footy.

Centre Bill Gase barged over two defenders for Ipswich’s opening try and could’ve had another when winger Jarra Briggs tapped a Wavell cutout pass back to him were the ball not ruled forward.

The close shave seemed to spark Wavell to life with Caleb Esera and Tevita Toloi leading the fightback as halves Riva Johnson and Rhys Timms finally found some rhythm but no-one had accounted for livewire Ipswich five-eighth Waylon Fiaii.

With nothing on out wide, Fiaii bamboozled his markers before feeding a pinpoint offload for Elone Taufa to score beside the sticks against the run of play.

Undeterred, Wavell pressed on and their persistence paid off when Lodoviko Cokanauto chanced his arm and outpaced the Ipswich defence to score a game-changing try on the siren.

Not to be outdone, Ipswich struck back with a gamble of their own as Briggs intercepted a loose pass and bolted 50m to score untouched in the 38th minute and when Nick Fenton went down to injury from the following play, Wavell’s hopes looked grim.

Esera, however, had other ideas with the hulking lock smashing through three would-be tacklers for a memorable try.

Timms’ conversion brought the margin back to 10 points and when Jayden Clarkson and Ethan Olsen combined to put Wavell back on the offensive, it was only a matter of time before a third try came along and hooker Logan Cox was more than happy to oblige with a jinking effort from dummy half to close the gap even further.

A rampaging Toloi then put Wavell in front for the first time 22-18 and with nine minutes to play, it seemed their four-point lead would hold.

But the drama wasn’t over and when a late knock on gave Ipswich prime field position with one minute to play, it was Briggs again who produced the goods and dotted down in the corner to lock things up at 22-all.

Wavell’s hopes then hinged on Ipswich skipper Lachlan Williamson missing the conversion and when the kick faded left and Ipswich lost possession from the ensuing golden-point kickoff, it was only a matter of time before Timms got his chance to step up.

WAVELL STATE HIGH 24 (Cokanauto, Esera, Cox, Toloi tries; Timms 4 goals) def IPSWICH STATE HIGH 22 (Briggs 2, Gase, Fiaii tries; Williamson 3 goals)

PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN 50 (Hodges 2, Piakura 2, Higgins, Duckett, Smith, Ambrosyev, Heu tries; Sexton 7 goals) def ST MARY’S TOOWOOMBA 6 (Wright-Dunrobin try; Voll goal)

KEEBRA PARK v COOMBABAH

Keebra Park stepped up to the plate this afternoon at Kougari Oval when it accounted for Gold Coast neighbours Coombabah SHS 42-12 in the National School Boy Cup Finals.

Keebra Park put a down payment on victory in the last 10 minutes of the first half when it established a match winning 22-0 lead.

Spear-headed by centre Faataate Timal Keebra went up a gear in class against whole hearted rivals who poured a 100% into their effort.

Timal set the oval alight in the opening minutes once beating four tacklers in a rampaging run, and soon after sprinting 90 metres to score after a Coombabah kick rebounded favourably.

It was one of two occasions when Coombabah challenged Keebra Park with attacking kicks only to see Keebra gather possession and dash away to score long range tries.

The second occasion came when winger Trey Peni showed a clean pairs of heels down the left hand touch line.

Keebra Park then iced its first half performance when prop Elifasa Leilua attacked the line like a freight train to steer his way over next to the posts.

Coombabah were well organised early.

They had an excellent long and short kicking game and were up to the task when challenged by the treat of Keebra Park No.9 Brandon Ewing.

Indeed the spirited group did manage to the score first try of the second half to reduce Keebra’s lead to 22-6.

But Keebra are a hard side to hold and so it was the case.

One highlight of the second half was a beautiful gliding run to the line by Keebra fullback Jahream Bula.

Keebra Park SHS will now play Wavell SHS next Thursday at Langlands Park.

The other semi final will be between Marsden SHS and Palm Beach Currumbin SHS.

Keebra Park SHS 42 (Bula 2, Timal, Peni, Borg, Leilua, Ewing, Vickery, Pereira tries: Peni 6 conv) def Coombabah SHS 12 (Wilson, Hass: Lewis 2 conv).
