Live stream: Townsville packing a punch for Water Polo Queensland Senior Country Championships

Townsville’s top male water polo players have been Queensland’s wandering nomads for five long seasons, but this year they are back under the one banner and plan to be a force to be reckoned with.

Prohibitive costs and exhaustive travel requirements combined to deprive the city’s male players of the chance to play together at the Water Polo Queensland Senior Country Championships over the past half decade.

But with the tournament back in the North Queensland capital this weekend, Townsville Water Polo president Ben Smith said it had given the region a rare opportunity to showcase its true strength in the pool.

Every match from the final day of the country championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV across all of News Corp Australia’s Queensland mastheads.

With the tournament hosted in different regional centres across Queensland, only the most ardent of competitors make the travel each year with Townsville players regularly added to a list of “draft players,” roped in to fill numbers for other regional outfits.

Since 2019, the city has not had its own team in the tournament. That changes this weekend as the championships get underway in Townsville from Friday, February 16.

Smith welcomed the opportunity to host as a chance to reunite the city’s finest male players in Townsville colours for the first time in five years.

“It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had full Townsville men’s and women’s sides,” Smith said.

“Not having that issue of travel and those extra expenses has really taken an edge off. The cost can add up and it’s unfortunately something we accept that if you want to play in comps like this you’ve got to travel.

“Having something like this at home brings a lot more people out of the woodwork and we’ll see some new faces to this level of competition that we can hopefully get to stick around in the future.”

Young guns Jacob Fowler and Shaun Paton will form a formidable combination with team veteran Philippe Wolanski when the tournament begins on Friday.

The KommunityTV live stream coverage gets underway from 8am on Sunday and includes all matches from the finals including all four medal matches from the Northern Beaches Leisure Centre.
