The top two best-performing teams – UQ Barras and Sydney Uni Blue – will face off in a highly anticipated U18 boys gold semi-final at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in Perth on Thursday.

Five-time champion Uni Blue kept its title defence aspirations alive with victory against the UWA Bears, while the Barras overcame the Polo Bears.

UTS Balmain, the only other undefeated outfit in that age group at the nationals, will take on UNSW Wests in the second semi.

In a seesawing contest, a courageous shot from Uni Blue’s Ryan Ford from an acute angle pushed its quarter-final lead out to two goals with seconds remaining for the Pool C heavyweights.

Goalkeeper Harrison Ballard then iced the contest with the final throw of the game after the Bears missed at the other end, resulting in a 14-11 victory.

But the contest was much closer than that, with little separating both sides throughout as they traded blows.

Besides the telling strike which sealed it for the powerhouse, Ford was the leading scorer with three other goals. Marcus Cupac and Hamish Ellison finished with two apiece and Orlando Mina fired home two crucial penalty strikes.

For the vanquished, Jake Taboni scored four goals and Sam Regan found the back of the net three times.

It took UNSW Wests until the final few minutes before they pulled clear of the SNB Breakers to tie up their spot in the semi-finals.

Gallant in defeat, the Breakers suffered in the final quarter on the back of some ill-disciplined play before going down 13-10.

They had led 4-2 early in the entertaining contest before Wests levelled up proceedings, which remained close until late in the final quarter.

Pool A table leader UQ Barras were too strong for the Polo Bears in their quarter-final with 14-10 victory.

Sean Bright led the way with five goals and Patrick Duggan finished with four

Pool B leader UTS Balmain Tigers claimed a 9-8 victory against the Hunter Hurricanes in their defensive thriller to progress to the final four.

DAY THREE PREVIEW

Four quarter-finals will be the headline act as the competition goes up a notch at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships on Wednesday.

Three pools will be exclusively live streamed here on KommunityTV on day three of the tournament in Perth.

And the U18 boys gold battles will be the ones to watch.

Reigning champions Sydney University will take on UWA Bears, UQ Barras face Polo Bears, UTS Balmain Tigers take on Hunter Hurricanes and SNB Breakers clash with UNSW Wests in the final four battles.

Wednesday’s live stream coverage will also feature U14 boys and girls plus U18 girls matches across three pools at Perth HPC.

A trio of challengers have emerged for the U18 boys gold crown at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

After day two action on Tuesday, SNB Breakers, UQ Barras and UTS Balmain Tigers have all streaked out to 3-0 starts to the tournament in Perth.

The only downside however, five-time reigning champions Sydney University have also begun the championships in undefeated fashion. All four sides sit top of their respective groups.

KommunityTV live streamed every match from three pools at Perth HBC on Tuesday as part of a huge 10-days of water polo.

SNB Breakers recorded one of the most impressive wins of day two as they dismantled UQ Tugun 19-2.

Jett Semmens led the way with four goals for the Breakers while Kosta Tsiaousis nabbed three and Rune Kaalund, Charlie Lewcock, Joshua Wilson and Thomas Ellison all grabbed doubles.

It wasn’t so straightforward for 2024 winners Sydney Uni as they were well pushed by the Melville Sharks in a 13-10 victory.

Hamish Ellison and Orlando Mina both scored four for the Lions.

In U18 girls green action, Water Polo SA recorded one of the results of the day as they won their first match of the tournament.

Chelsea Frost starred for SA as they proved too strong for Geraldton in a 13-1 triumph.

Come back here on Wednesday to watch the day three action.

KommunityTV will exclusively live stream more than 200 matches across three pools at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

The fortnight is split into two five-day age tournaments, with the U14 and U18 teams competing from April 14-18 before the U12 and U16 teams take to the pool from April 20-24.
