The Devils are still undefeated and have begun the charge toward the Australian Water Polo League finals.

Drummoyne captain Blake Edwards stood tall when it counted most with a final quarter hattrick to stamp his authority on what was a tight contest against UWA Torpedoes.

The Aussie Sharks vice-captain finished with five goals as the league leaders pulled away to a 12-8 win in their home pool.

It was a valiant performance from the sixth-placed Torpedoes, who matched their high-powered rivals across the opening three quarters.

The boys from the west even fought back to win the third quarter and reduced the deficit to one goal thanks to the tough-as-nails defensive work of Canadian national Alexsa Gardijan in the middle of the pool.

But Edwards, along with Aussie teammates AJ Roach and Tristan Glanznig, proved his class in the final quarter to secure the Devils’ 14th straight win of the season.

The loss continues a tough weekend on the road for the Torpedoes who will face both top two sides, the Devils and UNSW Wests Magpies, twice across the four days of action.

The KommunityTV cameras head to Cronulla Aquatic Centre on Saturday to capture the double header between the ACU Cronulla Sharks and Fremantle Marlins before our attention turns to the Queensland Thunder for the first time this season on Sunday.

It was a case of youth and experience combining to drive UWA Torpedoes to a second-straight road win on Friday night.

A Bronwen Knox masterclass in the backfield and a sensational showing from young gun Pippa Pedley helped the Torpedoes survive a late fightback from the Devils in a 12-11 win.

A decisive third-quarter shutout of the Devils proved the difference between the sides after the Torpedoes pushed ahead by three goals heading into the final term.

Drummoyne fought back valiantly in the final quarter with a late Georgia Southern double reducing the deficit to a single goal in the end.

The win has secured the Torpedoes finals fate and helped propel the side above the Devils for the time being.

PREVIEW:

Australian Olympian Blake Edwards has revealed the secret to Drummoyne’s unstoppable form in the Australian Water Polo League this season.

The Devils men are the only undefeated side in the competition, heading into a massive four-game weekend where they will clash with the league’s Western Australian sides twice each.

The Friday night showdown against UWA Torpedoes will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, with the women’s clash opening the double header from 7.30pm.

The Devils fell agonisingly short of a third-straight grand final berth last season, but the Aussie Sharks co-captain was adamant there was a change in the water this season.

“I think that’s what’s different this season is that commitment from not just the guys who have a starting spot but all the players down to the 22nd man on the roster,” Edwards said.

“There’s real commitment from the playing group and selflessness to achieve something special together.”

The Devils added a couple of key players to the squad in the off season, including Spanish import Guillem Garcia and Aussie Sharks’ winger Tristan Glanznig.

Both have made an immediate impact on the national league, with Glanznig sitting second on the goal scorers list with 40 goals in 12 games.

Garcia is in 10th spot on the list with 23 goals in 11 games.

Edwards said the new additions had really boosted the squad and the impact is noticeable during the harder matches.

“We’ve probably added a bit more depth than we’ve had in previous years, which helps us play out all four quarters,” Edwards said.

“We got that result over Wests last weekend when we were missing a couple of key players, so I think that gave the team a lot of confidence with how deep our list actually is.

“We can rely on other players to step up and fill the void if there’s ever any sickness or injury.”

The men’s ladder is neck and neck between the top five teams, with the Sydney-based teams once again the ones to beat.

“I think there’s probably four other teams that can take it out this year, which are Sydney Uni, Wests, Cronulla and Balmain,” Edwards said.

“Each of those teams can beat each other on their day.

“That’s why I think finishing in the top two will be a huge advantage, because those games are going to be really physically taxing.

“So if you’re lucky enough to finish in the top two, then bag an early win through to the final, that’ll be a really big advantage for the team to have a couple of games less potentially than their grand final opponent.”

UWA Torpedoes sit just inside the top six and although they’ve fallen short against the top teams, Edwards said it would be naive to count them out this weekend.

“UWA are a very good team and historically they’ve played very well against us,” he said.

“I don’t think we’re going to pay any attention to their ladder position, we know that they’ve got some really experienced players and a fantastic coach.

“So our boys are going to be fired up and focused because we know it can be a potential danger game for us, but thankfully we’re playing them at Drummoyne instead of making the trip over to Perth so that will give us some confidence.”
