A forced move to Sydney to pursue his water polo passion has gained ACU Cronulla Sharks driver Jimmy Dickson a second family.
When his Victorian team Barbarians withdrew from the AWL after just one season, Dickson packed up and moved north.
And he hasn’t looked back.
“I moved up here in 2019, so I’ve been playing for Cronulla for five seasons now. It’s nice to finally hit a milestone,” Dickson said.

“There’s a Victorian team now, the Phoenix, but I just feel at home with Cronulla.”
The Sharks head to Adelaide this weekend to take on the FYFE Adelaide Jets, with the first two of four games to be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV on Saturday afternoon.

Dickson, who moved to Sydney as a teenager, doesn’t come from a water polo background.
“I was originally a swimmer, but I think it’s a bit generic,” Dickson said.
“You get bored just following that black line down the bottom of the pool.
“I remember being in year five or six and my school made up a water polo team. I’ve stuck with it ever since.”
His parents made the move to Sydney with him but now live in Queensland, however Dickson said he’s made his own family here.
“It’s just a really nice group,” he said.
“I go over to my teammates’ houses for dinner and we all hang out. They’ve just made me feel really welcome.
“We all get around each other and back each other with everything, we’re just like a family within the club.
“We see each other all the time, we bicker a bit but we all love each other.”
He said the culture is important as it helps younger players feel a part of the group.
“We do a lot of team dinners, we try to do them once a week and I think that helps the new boys integrate a bit better,” he said.
“We go out to play golf, we go just down to the pub to have a drink, so we just invite those boys along and help make them feel part of the team.”
The Sharks have been inching closer to AWL glory since Dickson joined, taking home the bronze medal last season, and he said it’s his dream to take out the championship with the club.
“I remember in my first season with Cronulla we finished ninth, then we got seventh, then fifth, then last year we got third, so if we follow the trend of jumping up two spots every year, we could win the whole thing,” he said.
“I know the team has a rich history from the 90s, but the men haven’t won the national league since before I was born.
“So that would just be amazing to actually get a win.
“Our goal this year is to make the top six and then hopefully once we make finals, we just really push in that grand final.”
The team will welcome back Aussie Sharks players Marcus Berehulak and Milos Maksimovic this week from national team duties, along with head coach Vedran Cirkovic, which Dickson said will be a massive boost.
“We didn’t really have a proper direction without our coach,” he said.
“We were all just yelling at each other during games, so I think we’ll be a lot more together as a group with him and the national team boys back.”
