Capital Darters shooter Hayley Matthews has backed the nation’s capital to come out in force, and almost become the team’s eighth player during a big week of Australian Netball Championships action.

The ACT will play host for a new-look national championships, which features the Territory Storm, NSW Waratahs and a First Nations representative side, the Black Swans.

Every match of the championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from Sunday.

Matthews, who moved to the Gold Coast to take up an opportunity at the Titans in the Ruby Series last year, will return home to pull on the pink dress of the Darters.

Hayley Matthew is back home.

It is not the first time Matthews has represented her home territory on the national stage, but it will be the first time on home soil and she looked forward to seeing the local faithful pack the stands at the ACT Netball Centre.

“I am always excited to be representing ACT,” she said.

“Given that again, I grew up there, and I know and love so many people that I play with down there. But also the community down there is quite netball focused. They get really involved, which makes it really exciting.

“I think a lot of the other states have those teams in the higher levels, we’re the only (Super Netball) style team they have down there (in the ACT). That is why they get behind us so much.

“There will be more spectators coming to these nationals. ACT, we are quite small and we have to work for those opportunities in our hometown. It is a good opportunity for us to showcase what netball is like in the ACT.”

Matthews, who was part of the Titans Ruby Series side that finished runners up this season, said she was looking forward to coming up against some of the best netballers in the country, but had her eye out for one match in particular.

“I have a friend Courtney Murphy, who is in the Titans team with me, she is playing for the Northern Territory team,” she said.

“I am excited to play them just because we’re friends and we have that friendly rivalry.”
