A three-try, seven-minute first-half blitz set up Shalom College’s win over the Rockhampton Grammar School in the Dolphins Cup.
The Bundaberg outfit ran out 30-12 winners in the Round 4 clash at Rockhampton’s Rugby Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dolphins Challenge game between Shalom and Emerald’s Marist College was a much tighter affair.
Shalom’s replacement winger Josh Sutton scored with just 90 seconds left on the clock to seal the 24-18 victory.
Shalom’s first XIII coach Antonio Kaufusi said it was a good win for his team.
“We just made sure we had the shape. I was really happy with the way the boys ran it,” he said.
“It’s good that we’re putting into practice what we’ve been doing at training.”
Kaufusi praised the efforts of his middles, Jude Sheppard and Ryan Charteris, as well as centre Tom Morcom and five-eighth Zander Evans, who combined well on the left edge.
It was the first win for Shalom, who had previously lost to competition frontrunners Emmaus and St Brendan’s.
Kaufusi said his players had been buoyed by their top eight finish at the Confraternity Carnival, and were keen to reproduce that sort of form in the Dolphins Cup.
“Although we’ve lost two games, I think we’ve been really, really competitive,” he said.
The teams were locked at 6-6 early in the first half before Campbell’s hat-trick blew the game open and had Shalom leading 22-6 at half-time.
They scored two tries to one in the second half to get the two points..
Second rower Toby Kelly, fullback Blake Powter and forward Noah Law completed the scoring for Shalom, while winger Harrison Becker and lock Samuel Young scored for Grammar.
REPLAY: Dolphins Cup R4 - Marist College v Shalom College (Dolphins Challenge)
PREVIEW
Rockhampton Grammar will “give it everything” in their all-important Dolphins Cup clash with Bundaberg’s Shalom College on Tuesday.
They will clash at 3.30pm, while Marist College and Shalom will face off in the Dolphins Challenge at 2.30pm - and you can watch the action live on KommunityTV via this website.
Grammar and Shalom are both sitting on two points, and will be looking to play their way into the top four.
Grammar’s rugby coordinator Clayton Bohan said the players were excited and eager to go after a solid showing at the Confraternity Carnival where they finished in the quarter-finals of the Bob Lindner Trophy.
He wanted to see them produce on Tuesday the same tireless effort they did at Confro.

“It was pretty tough. We had a lot of close games where results didn’t go in our favour but we also took a lot of learnings away from the carnival that we’re keen to implement moving forward,” he said.
“The biggest takeaway was our effort. Every game we were in the fight, we didn’t give up even when our backs were against the wall.
“We’re going to put our best foot forward on Tuesday. We want to give it everything we’ve got.
“We expect Shalom to be very good; they played very well at Confraternity and finished in the top eight so we’re expecting it to be a hard hitout.
“But if we stick to our game plan and our structures, we’re pretty confident we can come away with the win.”
Bohan was expecting back rower Cooper Broadhurst and lock Cooper Mackenzie to continue their impressive form, saying they were strong, athletic individuals who loved putting in the hard yards and had the ability to lift their teammates.
Hooker Grady Wight, who has just returned from playing with the Queensland schoolboys rugby union team, would also have a big say on the game.
Shalom College, coached by former NRL forward Antonio Kaufusi, is coming off an impressive showing at the Confraternity Carnival themselves where they defeated St Augustine’s College in the play-offs to take a top five finish.
