Queensland schoolgirls fullback Montaya Hudson got one back on her northern rivals by spearheading Marsden SHS to a grand final win over Kirwan SHS.
Townsville-raised Hudson, playing fullback, lit up Dolphin Oval with two long-distance tries as Marsden SHS established a winning 22-0 lead and went on to win 36-16.
Winger Alyssa McCarthy was also a two-try hero, with her left edge effort just after halftime giving Marsden SHS a down payment on victory.

With No.13 Patricia Wani paving the way down the middle, the Jamie Feeney-coached side produced a winning effort in the school’s most successful season since ramping up its schoolgirl program.
Kirwan SHS showed plenty early and never gave in, as emphasised by their three second half tries.
Indeed, they scored three of the last five tries, but Marsden’s momentum across the opening 40 minutes, coupled with a touch of class, proved too much.
Marsden SHS could then see the finishing line when centre Kiana Tihore-Te-Tauri produced a storming effort down the middle of the field.
In the first half, Marsden SHS prop Karen Pritchard drew a line in the sand in the opening minutes with a monumental tackle on her opposite Chloe Watson that shook the foundations.
She followed it up with another heavy collison two tackles later and it was game on.
Marsden SHS opened the scoring courtesy of winger McCarthy, who had her aerial skills on show, going up and coming down with the ball to snare a bomb. She converted her own try from wide out and it was 6-0.
Kirwan SHS’s power game was a big challenge early, but with a roaring home ground helping fortify the goal line, Marsden SHS’s defensive line held.
REPLAYS and MATCH REPORTS
Trinity Bay take thriller in golden point
- Andrew Dawson
The brother of a North Queensland Cowboys star slotted Trinity Bay SHS to victory in an extra-time thriller over Lockyer District SHS.
At a sun-soaked Redcilffe, Vai Nannai kicked a penalty goal after a high tackle call to hand his side a 18-16 win.
The victory was claimed after the game had been plunged into overtime after a dramatic opening hour.
What a grand final it was.
Locked 16-all in normal time, Trinity Bay packed a scrum and won the ball 60 seconds from the end, pounding the Lockyer line at the death and then almost scoring in the corner.
Adding to the drama were injuries to two Lockyer District boys, forcing a pause in the clash.
Trinity Bay SHS had nosed in front 13 minutes from fulltime when fullback Liam O’Brien helped engineer his team’s third try.
O’Brien creation of the dead locking breaking try by his centre Aiden Caisley was class, but was then matched by Lockyer’s halfback Kade Buhse whose super work to put big centre Shaneton Karapen helped tie the scores 16-all, 10 minutes from time.
It set the scene for a thriller.
Both O’Brien and Buhse were outstanding for their respective teams, with O’Brien’s work from the back and support play through the middle and on the edge a constant danger. O’Brien then covered an attacking grubber from Buhse three minutes from fulltime to prevent a try.
Trinity Bay interchange dummy half Giwea Bosuen also impacted the momentum of the game in the second half before Lockyer rallied heading for home.
For all the excitement and ball movement of a cut-and-thrust first half, it was a tackle by diminutive Lockyer SHS fullback Cooper Liston which was one of the highlights.
Three tries were scored in the opening 30 minutes, but there would have been a fourth if Liston had somehow stopped one of Trinity Bay’s big boppers with an ankle tackle within arm’s reach of the tryline.
A try on halftime by Trinity Bay raised his side to just a four-point deficit after Lockyer had set the running by leading 10-nil.
For Trinity Bay, exciting fullback O’Brien crossed and Nannai’s sideline kick prompted a roar from his teammates.
Earlier, Lockyer prop Clayton Andrew, who had a big game, set the tone in the middle as his team’s go forward led to bruising centre Shanton Karapen bursting over, after impressive halfback Buhse had played his part as well.
Karen Murphy Cup - Cairns SHS sees off Stretton challenge
Cairns SHS are the Karyn Murphy Cup champions after defeating Stretton State College 30-18 in a thrilling grand final.
Despite losing to Stretton earlier in the day, Cairns were able to turn the tables by the scoring the final two tries of an absorbing match.
Trailing 12-0 at halftime, Stretton rose from the ashes to level at 18-18 late in the match.
But it wasn’t enough to overcome the strength of Cairns, in particular their No.1, Elenoa Regunamada, who was on fire.
The fullback had a hand in the first try of the game for Loti Sagigi before adding her own stamp of authority in the second half.
As if dodging three defenders wasn’t enough, Regunamada then ran an impressive 70 meters to claim her well-deserved try.
Talea Villaflor and Sentina Waianga also scored for Cairns, with the latter being the result of, yet again, a piece of Regunamada magic.
Stretton threatened to steal the game early in the second half through a trio of tries but rasn out of gas at the end.
Their loss could have been even greater had it not been for their star hooker Louise Fowler, who proved to be a constant threat to the opposition in all three games.
Earlier in the day, Stretton’s dynamic duo of Lailani Tuqiri and Bailee Williams combined to inspire a 16-10 victory over Cairns.
The scores were locked at 4-4 at the break and 10-10 late before Stretton No.13 Harmony Batham broke the scrum-half and hooker scoring frenzy, landing the decisive four-pointer.
Karyn Murphy Cup - Cairns SHS v Stretton State College
The third team in the round robin competition, Isis District SHS, sufferedd back-to-back defeats.
After a bus breakdown delayed their arrival at the ground, they fell 40-0 to Cairns SHS and then 20-0 to Stretton.
It looked as though the first half against Stretton would be scoreless until Bailee Williams flew over the line in the ninth minute.
It was quickly followed by a four-pointer from Harmony Batham on the stroke of halftime, taking her schools’ lead to 8-0.
Isis No.13 Tanya Severa worked tirelessly for the duration of the game but she couldn’t stop Stretton’s scoring spree, with Williams putting another try next to her name in the second half and Ash Maiuri putting the icing on the cake.
