Live stream: Shalom College ready to ‘make noise’ in Dolphins Cup clash with The Cathedral College

One of the great defensive performances has still fallen short as a defiant Cathedral College pushed past Shalom College in thrilling circumstances. Watch the full REPLAY.

Replay: Shalom College v The Cathedral College - Dolphin Cup Round 4

Not even one of the all-time great defensive performances from Shalom College was enough to claim victory in Round 4 of the Dolphins Cup on Tuesday as The Cathedral College claimed a thrilling 14-12 win.

With nothing separating the two Dolphins Cup heavyweight sides with less than three minutes to play, Zac Bateman’s nerves of steel shone through as he slotted through a late penalty goal to break the deadlock and gift his side the victory.

Shalom fullback Parkka Perrotta-Dowling opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the clash with a barnstorming run close to the corner as his electric pace and drive left The Cathedral College’s defence in his wake.

In a high-paced clash, TCC hit back in the 18th minute with one of the great team tries.

The play started near the middle of the field, with a grubber kick, followed by a last ditch offload leading to a stunning try for Parker Gallagher to tie the game up.

The breakthrough try proved to be a catalyst for The Cathedral College as it scored its second try of the game under the posts just four minutes and went into the break with a 12-6 lead.

However, Shalom College stormed out of the blocks in the second half, scoring a try to level the game inside the opening 30 seconds after retrieving the ball from its own kick-off.

Despite their strong start to the second half, Shalom College found itself on the back foot for the majority of the second period as The Cathedral College dominated proceedings.

Shalom College produced one of the all-time great defensive performances as they denied TCC several times just inches from their tryline.

Antonio Kaufusi’s side was seemingly an impenetrable wall on their own line as they had an answer for everything The Cathedral College threw at them.

Not even the work of Cathedral halfback Michael Busby, who was a force to be reckoned with for the entire clash with his silky smooth playmaking and crafty footwork was enough to break through the resilient wall at the back.

However, after producing countless heroic acts of defence, Shalom proved to be its own worst enemy when in possession as it conceded a penalty for obstruction just four minutes before the final buzzer from close range directly in front.

Kaufusi’s team had one final chance to claim victory after conceding from the penalty but TCC held firm to claim a vital win as we head into the business end of the season.

The victory completed a Cathedral College double for the day, with the Schoolgirls Cup side claiming a 24-6 win over Shalom.

PREVIEW

Shalom College is locked and loaded ahead of a blockbuster Dolphins Cup clash with The Cathedral College on Tuesday.

With a win and a loss so far to their name, Shalom College coach Antonio Kaufusi knows how important this clash is for his side as they take on a TCC team that has won two of their three games.

“We had to come back from the Confro (Confraternity Carnival) and for us it was just making sure everyone pulled up good,” Kaufusi said.

“We’ve been pretty happy with our training leading into the game, and I think the challenge for us has always been making sure we can keep competing if we want to make a bit of noise at the end of the season.”

While it has been over a month since round 3 of the Dolphins Cup, both sides are well-oiled after the recent Confraternity Carnival.

“I think we learned a lot about ourselves up at Confro in Townsville,” Kaufusi said.

“I reckon those boys will take that out and make sure we can make the most of it against TCC.

“I think they haven’t reached their potential yet, but it is up to them, so I am excited to see how they respond.”

Kaufusi was full of respect for the The Cathedral College and is expecting a strong performance from his opposition.

“Training has been pretty intense going into this game against TCC, I have got a lot of respect for what they do,” he said.

“They have been a really tough and competitive school for a long, long time, so we are under no illusions we are coming up against a really strong footy side.

“For us, we have got to look after ourselves and make sure we are doing our job right before we even start looking at those guys.

“I will be happy if we can work hard in a couple of key areas that we need.”

With such a high stakes contest beckoning, Kaufusi is leaning on his senior players to step up.

“I think our captain Joseph Doyle has been leading from the front,” he said.

“Levi Monckton our hooker, he’s been unbelievable, he’s been tough in that middle with Ryan Charteris, who’s been playing front row for me.

“He brings a different type of build and size, he’s got good leg speed as well.

“Those guys are in year 12, so I will be looking for my seniors to lead from the front there.”
