Coombabah SHS scored a converted try with 90 seconds remaining to burst past a crestfallen Redcliffe SHS in a Langer Trophy thriller, clinching a place in next week’s quarterfinals.

The Mr Reliable of the Coombabah SHS backline, centre Kane Garland, scored a scrambling try after gathering a rebounding ball along the ground, giving goal kicking fullback Shannon Donaldson the chance to win the game for his side.

Donaldson deflected the pressure to nail the kick from a handy position, giving his side a 24-22 win.

“It was a close kick but it was awkward and Shannon was under pressure and he did well to nail it said Coombabah SHS coach Sam Meskell. “His goal kicking was the difference. He made all four kicks.’’

Meskell said victory for his team was a reward for them “fighting each week’’. “I am just so happy for them.’’

It was anyone’s match from start to finish, with Coombabah leading 12-6 after halftime before teams traded try for try in the second half.

Redcliffe looked the winners entering the last five minutes, but a six-again ruling gave Coombabah an extended run at their opponents line, leading to Garland’s match clinching four pointer.

“He (Garland) competes hard,’’ Meskell said. “He is not the biggest player or the most talented, but he keeps turning up and that was obvious today.’’

Redcliffe SHS now bow out of the competition, while Coombabah qualify for the eight team quarterfinals at Bishop Park on Tuesday.

Redcliffe’s position in the quarterfinals will be taken by Titans Schools League premiers, Gold Coast side Marymount College.

Earlier in the clash, Coombabah SHS led 12-6 at halftime but Redcliffe scored first in the second half when winger Bailin Haji glided over.

It was a simple, old fashioned backs ball movement to the edges, through the hands of halves Jayden Alefaio and Blake Kehl, out to the midfield via fullback Guy Visachi and beyond to winger Haji who exploded over to score.

But Redcliffe’s joy at drawing level 12-all was short lived, with consistent Coombabah centre Kane Garland finding the try line after Redcliffe were unable to defuse a bomb.

Garland, a great campaigner, was rewarded for following the play and with the successful conversion, it was 18-12 to Coombabah SHS.

But this seesawing affair had plenty of run left in it, with Redcliffe scoring next to draw 18-all after gun fullback Visachi plucked out of the air a bouncing ball after his half Kehl had found space with a delicate, perfectly placed chip kick.

Kehl may have grabbed the spotlight with his try creating kick, but soon after his halves partner Alefaio was caught in the glare of high beam himself, storming over to score and give Redcliffe to the lead.
